Been following my macros to a T... but today I caved and had a Coke Zero... can anyone give me some information about drinking diet drinks here and there? Will it put a hold on weight loss?

I must ad that I do feel it made me bloated2

No diet drinks will not put a hold on weight loss.22

No, they're no or low calorie. I love Diet Pepsi and Coke Zero.12

You’ll be fine. Weight loss shows up week by week as you stick to the plan. Diet Coke has no more calories than water.10

I started drinking diet soda when I began my weight loss phase, and then I went on to lose 50lbs and improve all my health markers, including reversing the progression of pre-diabetes. At the time I was drinking 4+ cans a day.
Kept drinking diet soda as I transitioned into maintenance and did this for around 6 years, all while continuing to keep my weight and health markers in the optimal range.
I have reduced my intake lately because I've discovered the awesomeness of sparkling flavored waters, but I have nothing negative to say about diet soda, they were very helpful for me, during the time I drank them.12 -
I've dropped 108 lbs consuming diet soft drinks daily.11

I literally never drank diet sodas until I started trying to lose weight - one of the things I did to reduce my calories was swap regular for diet versions.
Lost weight (and then maintained) as expected on appropriate calorie level.
I understand carbonated drinks can make you feel bloated - but that is not a weight loss issue.
Actually neither is "following macros to a T" - good though that may be from a nutrition viewpoint - you will lose weight dependant on your calorie intake.

There is some research to suggest that dehydration may result from the consumption of diet sodas. The bloating is most likely from water retention. But one soda will not derail you at all.33

Diet soda is like 99% water and is low sodium. How is it causing water retention?
As for dehydration, that's a myth that just won't die-
'It is true that caffeinated drinks can contribute to your daily fluid requirement.
Drinking caffeine-containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle doesn't cause fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested. While caffeinated drinks may have a mild diuretic effect — meaning that they may cause the need to urinate — they don't appear to increase the risk of dehydration.'

Increased water weight AND dehydration?
Btw, the sodium in soda is comparable to the sodium in tap water.
OP, there is no way for Coke Zero to halt or stall weight loss. It is essentially a zero calorie beverage, thus has no way to affect energy balance (which is what drives weight loss/gain).
Have at it. I have a couple per day.15 -

The bloating is most likely from the carbonation. A feature of all sodas, not just diet ones.

Coke zero...as in, zero calories. It's all about CICO so don't worry about it. As you were6

I never drank diet drinks until I decided to lose weight. I'll never look back. I mistakenly believed that aspartame was something scary. I was finally shown the light on MFP.
I lost ~40lbs, and have maintained it for over 6 months, drinking diet drinks daily.
They do cause bloat, but it's the carbonation, not water retention. Burn or pass some gas and it's gone. It will cause your stomach to physically bloat but the scale not go up. I occasionally wear corsets occasionally (not for weight loss related reasons) and you can tell, there is nowhere for the gas to go, you burp a lot when drinking soda.6 -

@jessstefanick that is a good question and the answer seems to vary as you have read. In the article above it hits the pros and cons these low/no calorie sweeteners may have on the trillions of microbes that make up our gut microbiome and is a huge driver of human health for the better or worse especially when it comes to autoimmune related disease states and obesity in general.
Human nutrition, the gut microbiome, and immune system: envisioning the future (deep on the science of the subject)

Gut microbiota in obesity and metabolic disorders. (Not so deep into science)
Obesity is a major public health issue as it is causally related to several chronic disorders, including type-2 diabetes, CVD and cancer. Novel research shows that the gut microbiota is involved in obesity and metabolic disorders, revealing that obese animal and human subjects have alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota compared to their lean counterparts....This knowledge is contributing to our understanding of how environmental factors influence obesity and associated diseases, providing new opportunities to design improved dietary intervention strategies to manage these disorders."

As with most diet issues we just have to add/take away items of concern and see our own personal results to know what is positive/negative for each of us.23 -
One of the reasons I stopped drinking diet soda was because of the dehydration articles. Another was because I wasn't drinking any water in and by itself whatsoever and I was trying to figure out how to get out of a plateau (I didn't have the mfp forums back then, OK?!)
After years of being off it, I started back up last summer.
But, yeah, 0 calories drinks add...0 calories to your diet so no, it won't hinder weight loss.3 -
I used to be a Diet Coke/Coke Zero addict. Then someone on MFP (forget the thread now) raised the possibility of it sabatoging weight loss. Initially I thought it was all woo given it’s zero calories (CICO), but their argument was more about the artificial sweeteners which would make you crave more real sugar and thereby increase caloric intake. I still thought it could be woo, but thought, what the heck? Maybe I should try giving it up... and I did... for straight water. I did lose weight (but maybe that’s because I’ve been watching caloric intake and working out), so who knows whether it was the diet soda... but I can tell you I look and feel better than ever before. Take from that what you will but for whoever put the initial post about diet soda on MFP that got me to quit, thank you. I feel much healthier now (but that’s just me... so again, take from this what you will).9

If it causes cravings and you then eat too much of the high calorie foods you crave - no suprises that you don't lose weight.
Whether it does cause cravings is an individual subjective thing.
People need to assess this on themselves individually ( calorie tracking would enable you to see you were consuming too many calories after succumbing to cravings )
Me personally - it has no such cravings effect so I happily continue drinking it and ignore that as it is a non issue for me.3 -
Diet soda, won’t directly hurt you at all in terms of weight loss. However there are some studies out there that consuming diet soda can lead to weight gain, which if I recall is due to the sweetening effect in the drink making one crave other sugary treats. I drank diet soda up until the new year, and I decided to give it up. It was hard at first, but now it’s second nature. I have the odd diet drink if we go out for dinner, but other than that it’s water, coffee or tea. The biggest thing I have noticed is that my cravings for chocolate and ice cream have reduced drastically which is the best benefit for me as I could do some damage to the calorie count when I get into that stuff2

I drink alot of Coke zero and cherry Coke zero. It's my main source of hydration. I've lost over 200lbs and kept it off. The calories I cut out going from regular pop to come zero played a huge role in my weight loss cause I probably esily cut out 600 calories a day.7

Well, yes - and like I said to previous poster - if You individually find it causing cravings and you then over eat, then, sure, dont drink it.
For those of us for whom it does not have this effect - safe to ignore that as a non issue.
Calorie tracking, of course, will help people to see what they are over eating.
