Hey again,
I've been entering that I run for about 30 minutes (I have no idea how fast so I just put an estimate, of 6 mph as an estimate every day) and the last few days it has been saying that I gain around 150, but today I swear I put the same thing and it said I gain 365 calories, which one sounds more correct to you?
Thanks

Since you don't know how fast you were running - there's no way to know for sure how many calories you burned.
Most people walk around 3 mph, with 4 being a very brisk walk or jog, and 5-6 mph are moving up to full running.
I jog around 4-5 mph and tend to burn about 300 calories in 30 minutes, roughly.
The best way to know is to use a heart rate monitor (hrm).

Hmm okay, thanks!0

Here is some info for ya...
Running, 10 mph (6 min mile)
Running, 10.9 mph (5.5 min mile)
Running, 5 mph (12 min mile)
Running, 5.2 mph (11.5 min mile)
Running, 6 mph (10 min mile)
Running, 6.7 mph (9 min mile)
Running, 7 mph (8.5 min mile)
Running, 7.5mph (8 min mile)
Running, 8 mph (7.5 min mile)
Running, 8.6 mph (7 min mile)
Running, 9 mph (6.5 min mile)
Go here and click on the activity calculator...then type in running and your other info. I think it is a pretty helpful site :-)

Do you know how far you're going? 6mph is a 10min mile, which means you're running three miles at 30 minutes.0

Oh, and you burn roughly 100 calories per mile so the 365 number sounds more accurate for 30 minutes of running.0

HTH.
I also jog about 4-5 mph and burn only about 220 calories in half an hours time. There's a vast difference in the calories each of us will burn depending on our size and fitness level. I agree that an HRM is the way to go0 -
try this mapmyrun.com - you can map your route and enter your time an wa la it gives you your calories and speed. I have a HRM now so I don't use it as much now
Good Luck0 -
I would recommend keeping track of your distance. I see others have mentioned mapmyrun.com that works great. I start a run at 7 mph and speed up from there. I can not go for an outside run with out my garmen. It tells you everything your would ever want to know. It also would work for walking and biking. HRM are available on them also, although I do not use mine.0

Just a guess but if you are new to running I doubt that you are already running at 6 mph. I've been running for nearly two months now and running at 6 mph is really tough...and I cycle a lot so my CV system is in pretty good shape. I would suggest you enter it as 5 mph. Today I "ran" for 50 minutes at 5 mph and burned almost 500 calories...according to the treadmill.0

Good anchor point: A 135 lb person burns about 100 calories per MILE of running.
You can take the # of miles X 100 X your weight / 135 for a reasonable estimate.
365 for 3 miles would be reasonable for someone who weighed 160-165 lbs.
Another interesting tidbit I got from my old running coach: At speeds above 5 mph, you actually burn more calories WALKING than running. It's because it's harder for your body to walk 5 mph than it is to run 5 mph. This is due to differences in the types and intensities of muscle contractions involved in speedwalking vs running.0 -
I run too and am currently in the process of training for my first 5k run. I have a Garmin watch and it tracks heart rate and calories and honestly, running doesn't always burn as many calories as you think. I ran last night for a total of 29 mins and a 1 min walk and burned 265 calories. It depends on your weight too.. a person who is heavier will burn more calories. Buy a heart rate watch to know for sure.. it's the best way :happy:0

I'm 5'4'', 160lbs
I burn about 300 cals in 30 min of "running" at 4.8mph (about the slowest rate you can actually run before having to call it walking). But I don't run the entire time, I do intervals of walking then running then walking then running.0 -
I've always gone by the 100 cals per mile equation. I have a heart rate monitor now and run hard on the TM. It still works out to maybe 115 cals per mile for me, but not much more than that. So don't over estimate!0
