NEW YORK—Maintaining that the jewelry was absolutely essential in communicating trust and commitment to your partner, matrimony experts confirmed Tuesday that an adequate engagement ring should cost at least three diamond miners’ lives.

Rings are merely symbolic imo. Therefore, don't spend more than you want to and can afford. A great engagement ring isn't going to make a relationship any better or even worse.

Abusers often beat their partner, then "make up for it" with jewelry, so I am calling BS on that bit.

IMO there is a cap on rings, once you hit a certain price range they are too big, gaudy, and obnoxious to wear if you do anything besides sit on a throne all day. 1.5 diamond miner's lives is about right for me.

I guess we can apply this to any thing that is manufactured abroad. However, it's not going to stop, people in the U.S. will not work for lower wages, so the businessman is going to send his production to places like China, India and Africa, so they can boost their profits.

It should be more of a sentimental thing than a material thing...
You don't want one that's going to break or turn your finger green, but nobody needs a $4,000 ring. Like, come on.
My engagement ring? My fiance asked my parents for their blessing. My mother asked him what he planned on doing for a ring, and he said, "I haven't figured that out yet, I just know I want to marry her."
So my mom went and got the very ring that my dad proposed to her with, over twenty years ago. I wouldn't care what it looked like. Its the sentimental value. Its an heirloom. But the most important part of it is the person that comes with it.

My ring is plain and small, but I also love it. We were starting a life.... what do I need a $4,000 ring for? This way I can never take it off and it doesn't get in the way.

A ring costs substantially less in cash than it does in other areas

It's obvious how big the engagement ring is, correlates to how much your so loves you, and how successful the marriage will be. *eye roll with a little barf in my mouth *
