I’ve got a lot of weight to lose but if I lose a pound a month I’ll be happy. I’m looking for that balance between striving to take better care of my body through fitness and diet and loving myself as is. Does anybody understand that? And how to get started?

Yes, I understand. Just log everything you put in your mouth.

I'd recommend setting a calorie goal to maintain your current weight, then start adding in some physical activity, perhaps in group classes. As you get a hang of logging food and find more exercise you enjoy you can adjust your weight loss goals in increments of a half a pound per week. I've lost about 30lbs in four months, but I understand being happy with yourself as you are. I didn't start losing weight because I disliked myself or my body, just wanted more energy and cheaper clothes!0
