Has anyone tried nutritional yeast? I've read about people using it as a seasoning. If you have, what do you think? I'm thinking of trying some.

I'm going to leave this one alone....

I'm sorry....I'm such a bad girl. I need to be spanked.
  • I've used it many times in soups and sauces. It gives it kind of a cheesy taste. It's really yummy and easy just to sprinkle over things. Also great on popcorn!!

    bump to read later :drinker:
  • The best tasting is RedStar...I think that's what the brand is anyway
  • I've been trying to find some to make vegan mac n cheese but I can't find it anywhere! Already searched 3 grocery stores. Does anyone know what aisle you would find it in? I think maybe I'm looking in the wrong place....

I get it in bulk from my local co-op. GREAT STUFF. I like it on popcorn the most, but really you can use it anywhere you might use parmesan cheese. I have used on flatbread/pita pizza's, mixed with greek yogurt as a dip.

I don't like sourdough. There's medication for that.

regular grocery you might have more luck looking for brewers yeast... I have found it in the spice aisle.

for great nutritional yeast you may have to go to a healthfood store.

my understanding is that they have the same basic benefits, but the brewers yeast (in some cases) can be a bit more bitter.

    I use them interchangeably.

    Vegan Mac & Cheese

    1 lb. macaroni pasta
    3/4 tub Tofutti Sour Supreme
    3 Tbsp. water
    1/2 cup nutritional yeast
    1/2 cup tahini
    1 tsp. garlic powder
    1/2 tsp. onion powder
    1/2 tsp. paprika

    • Boil the macaroni until it is soft.
    • Mix all the other ingredients in a large bowl, add the pasta, and enjoy!

    Makes 4 to 6 servings

I consume my nutritional yeast via unfiltered, bottle conditioned beer. Usually homebrewed beer that has been bottled is conditioned like this. You can buy some beer from breweries that use this old-school traditional way of conditioning as well. It's loaded with Vitamin B.
  • All this talk of nutritional yeast drove me out to the co-op to get some. I retract my earlier implication... Nutritional yeast is much better tasting than Brewers yeast.
