Weighing every day

A physician friend who has never had weight issues told me he weighs himself every day when he gets up. It helped him keep from letting extra poundage pile up. I started doing this as part of my weight loss/ management plan and it has been helpful, although weight may vary up to 3 lb from morning to morning. Most recommendations are to weigh once a week, but the daily weigh-in has helped keep me focused. Anyone else had success with this?

I have success weighing everyday in terms of weight shifts and trends. I try to weigh the same time every morning and have had good results !2

I weigh every day. It has enabled me to understand how foods affect my body.5

I've been weighing in every day too, it helps me keep on track more so than just once a week. It also helps me notice trends which is helpful.1

Daily weigher 😬. I use happy scale and for me it helps me stay on track. It’s not in an obsessive way just something that works for me.3

I weigh daily since I have daily fluctuations. I tend to stay within a pound of the same weight for days then suddenly drop 1-1.5 lb one day and fluctuate around the new number. Weekly weigh ins were stressful for me because I sometimes missed the drop. I weigh at the same time every day under identical conditions.5

I’ve never created undesired weight gain when weighing each morning and recording my weight in a journal.
I’ve created undesired weight gain when not weighing in each morning for an extended time period.
I’ve made a “business decision” that I’m going to weigh myself each morning for the rest of my life.8 -
Weighing daily reminds me first thing in the morning that being at a healthy weight is party of my life plan, which helps keep me on track every day. It also keeps me alert to any changes that I may need to pay attention to.
So yeah, daily weigher for life here.7 -
I weigh in daily and think it's beneficial and has helped me break my addiction to always having to have a perfect number on the scale, since I have a much better understanding of my weight fluctuations. I don't think I need to see the number every day to "help me from packing on the extra pounds", but it does help keep me apprised of all the data.
I strongly recommend if you weigh daily to use a trending app like Libra to help you better understand your weight trends.5 -
I also weigh myself daily. It’s like tracking your food, it keeps you aware and in the moment. If you weigh yourself weekly, it might be one of those days when you’re up or down 3 pounds and could change your food intake behaviors for the next week. If you weigh daily, you can get a better feel for your overall average weight.2

If you weigh weekly and are “up” or stagnant on weigh-in day because of water retention or other fluctuations, it can be super discouraging. You think you haven’t lost anything when maybe you have, it is just being masked that day by water weight. So I like to weigh daily.5

This, I understand the fluctuations and it keeps me on track even if my weight goes up , I dont ever get discouraged weighing daily.5 -

Still losing, coming up on a year now. Lost 34lbs just 10 or so to go so I know it will be very slow and steady and so I want it to continue slowly downwards.
I have a wifi scale and its seamless to sync the data.
Large fluctuations with the cycle and I like to keep an eye, plus I love cake and ice cream! But just within the allotted calories. Set to loose 0.5lb per week. Its working for me😀3 -
Agree with others. Daily weigh-ins are helpful to me. I use Happy scale to watch the trends and that is also very helpful.3

I weigh daily, but don't count it as a true loss/ gain until Ive seen it on the scale 2-3 days in a row. That's usually enough for me to know id it's just a fluctuation or a true change.3

I weigh in every day too - it keeps me motivated but I try not to compare until its been a week. So I congratulate or console myself on Sundays when I compare my weight to the previous Sunday.0

I'm a very analytical/data-driven person, so I find it fascinating to weigh every day at the same time-ish (not meaning time on the clock, necessarily - just after I've woken up and done my *ahem* morning business) and see the trends and fluctuations.
There was one day that I weighed myself and it said 352 (TEN pounds more than the day before) and I actually *didn't* freak out, because I knew I was trending down and was retaining water due to being on a new medication. The next day I was down to 345, and stayed there for about 5 days. It's really cool to see how much what I eat or even how medication can effect (affect?) your day to day weight.6 -
I weigh every day, too although only tend to log/check-in my weight on the weekend. If I gain weight back, I tend to log that, too just so that MFP has an accurate account of my weight. I'm not too fussed with the ups and downs as I've discovered that my body seems to respond well to exercise, so if I go up a bit, I can usually get back on track by just a little more cardio and cutting back on the snacks.0

I weigh everyday and use Happy Scale and Withings trend app to follow my progress. I have a lot of ups and downs, but the trend apps show my trend is down and that’s what’s really helped. Just knowing regardless of occasional blips, I’m trending downwards.0

I weigh in twice a week. my fridays and my mondays, just to see how i do during my work week vs the weekends.0

I weigh every day. It keeps me accountable. Doing this requires being aware of bodies natural changes and an awareness of what is happening internally. Hormone levels, elimination (or lack thereof ), fluid retention, etc. can all show up on the scale. Being able to weigh and know what my body needs and provide that through diet/exercise is part of my healthcare routine.0

All of this is good info. Not the “weigh once a week or you are obsessive” tradition, which seemed odd, since you do eat every day (I hope). I, too, have found that the daily morning weigh-in helps keep me accountable.4

It can be successful for some and extremely detrimental to others. I have been in both camps.
If you get on the scale each day with an expectation of seeing progressively lower weights it is a bad thing. If you need to see a lower weight for motivation or because you are being unduly harsh with your weight loss and/or exercise choices it is a really bad thing. True fat weight loss takes a lot of time and being kind to yourself during the process is important.
The problem with weekly, IME, is that it is easy to miss your new low weight for several weeks because it can show up at anytime and be gone the next day. This is especially true with people who are losing 1 pound or less a week. Also, a lot of people pick Sunday morning for their weigh-in which could easily follow a Saturday of eating out which can cause a weight fluctuation. I weigh everyday but I pick Friday as my "numbers" day because I will generally have eaten my own food for several days and I will be at a lower point in my food related water retention. That is not to say I wouldn't eat out on a Thurs because I was worried about water weight gain it is just that it happens less frequently.
I find it helpful for me to have a mindset of only charting my weight loss by the lowest number I see. That assumes I haven't been sick or have another cause of dehydration. I don't say to myself that I lost less weight when the scale goes up 3 pounds. That would drive me crazy. Even when someone asks me how much I have lost I go by the last lowest number.
ETA: "Numbers" day for me means recalculating my rate of loss among other things.7 -
I weigh every morning, but put more personal focus on the weekly average. The scale is what shocked me into starting this journey, and honestly, even though I have a ways to go, seeing numbers I haven't seen since (probably?) high school is still really cool to me, and inspires me to keep my focus.0

I don't think this is true. I don't think there has ever been a study comparing, so it is still just opinion. Something close, The National Weight Control registry put out some "tendencies" of people who maintained weightloss and the most successful maintainers weighed daily...
I think weighing daily can cause anxiy and obsession for some who are prone to that, but nobody disputes the value of remaining aware and mindful of where your weight control practice is.

I weigh daily. For a while, it could derail me, but I powered through it and now can use it as the tool it is meant to be.
That may not be the case for everyone as I had to get very objective about the data in order to do so. If you find it is negatively impacting your weight loss endeavors, and you can't shake it doing so, then best thing for the short term is to find a weighing frequency that does work for you. Readdress your relationship with the weight scale at a better time for you like, say, maintenance.0 -
I have always weighed myself several times a week, but not every day. I am fortunate in that I have never been one to get too emotionally tied to the number on the scale, I think because I enjoy playing around with the numbers and it's always been just another number to me.
Some people find getting on the scale every day stressful and do better weighing once a week or less often. Others find that weighing every day helps them to see how weight goes up and down and not always how you'd expect and THAT makes it easier for them to just look at it as a number.
You just have to figure out which way is the most compatible with how your brain works1
