Hey friends. I went on the Fat 2 Fit website and with my level of activity and info I should be eating between 2400-2600 calories a DAY. I have lost inches/pant sizes but not much actual weight while eating more...I don't know if eating this much would make me gain or actually lose more...seems like a lot though. Anyone doing this and losing?

I was just wondering exactly how many calories is best for weight loss? Interesting to see others comments on this topic...

I am around the 1550 mark myself...and it has worked very well for me. Sometimes I am over when I work out..eating back exercise calories..and sometimes I am under that in the 1350-1450 range.

    Good luck to everyone.

I love the fat2fit podcasts and if you follow their advice you should lose weight. They do say that if you want to speed it up a little you should eat the calories for your goal with a sedentary lifestyle. The weight loss is supposed to be a little slow in order to mainatain as much muscle mass as possible

Few are an instructor like yourself, therefore their activity levels aren't going to hit that number. However, if it were me, and I haven't been losing... I would be up to try it. What is the worst that can happen? You just dont lose still.

I can tell you what works for me. I am 5'3" and have lost 52 lbs so far. I eat anywhere from 1300 - 1600 calories/day. MFP has me eating about 1300 plus I try to eat back atleast half of my exercise calories or I am starving. If you are trying to lose, that sounds too high to me, but it would also depend on your exercise level. If you are burning like 1000 calories a day, then that makes sense if you are eating back your exercise calories. I wouldn't lose on that because I don't burn that much exercising.
  • I have in the past increased my caloric intake and lost weight...well inches actually but it was mostly due to the high protein in my diet. Lean protein and fitness will accelerate weight loss even if your caloric intake is higher than most, also complex carbs are great for burning fat and increasing energy.

idk. I checked the site. It says I have to eat 2100 cals to lose weight. that doesn't seem right to me. I think MFP is alot more accurate than that.

This is a completely individual thing and will vary depending on your height, current weight, activity level, and exercise. There is no way to answer this question.

For me eating over 1800 would put my body in maintenance mode so eating a lot never worked for me and I would just get stuck and think I am in a plateau. You are losing inches is still a good sign, the scale sometimes takes time so don't be discouraged. You are losing inches and that's terrific!! My suggestion is play around a little bit with it, see what works best for you. I am not sure how active you are but that also plays a major factor.

There's not one answer to this I don't think - totally depends on your weight/height, how active you are etc etc.

If you were say 250lbs and you were eating 4,000 cals per day (which is how you became overweight in the first place) then eating 2,000 per day would of course make you lose weight.

I, for example, am 178lbs and I don't lose anything at all if I eat more than about 1,300 cals per day.

For a 'normal' sized person, I'm not sure how you could lose weight from eating 2,500 cals per day. I mean, for weight maintenance, the average woman is meant to eat 2,000 so I'm honestly not sure how eating that much would cause enough of a calorie deficit to make you lose weight. Unless, of couse, you were burning off something like 800 - 1000 cals per day in exercise??

To the OP: You have to give your body enough fuel to work properly. Just like a campfire, you have to give it more wood if you want it to keep burning the wood. If you don't, it snuffs out. If I were you, I would try gradually increasing my calories and see what happens.

i eat about that much on heavy exercise days and just wrote a blog about this yesterday. I use that site as well as freedieting.com because I like their zig-zag calculator. This is what I came up with yesterday: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/AggieCass09/view/fueling-my-body-141041

if worse comes to worse you can always tone back the calories or stop eating if you arent hungry

I guess I should also preface this by saying I'm a fitness instructor. I teach 1-2 hours a day most days, so my burn is usually between 700-1000 cals a day.

It seems right to me it just depends on what your definition of hard workouts are. If you burn 800-1000 in your workouts then yes it would make sense to eat that much. Also remember MFP typically puts people at 1200 + (exercise cals) so 1000 cal burn would have you eating 2200 calories.

I usually eat 1500-2500 calories depending on the day. And so far I've had a consistent loss of .5 lbs a week. It's coming off slowly but so far in my journey it has never gone up. BUT I am breastfeeding :) and I am active. So I don't count. I mainly concentrate on healthy choices. Yesterday was a 2500 day and the scale went down a bit this morning. And if i eat under 1500 I tend to hold onto weight.

I would also like to say recently I tried staying between 1500-1800 and it just didn't work for me. It stalled my weight loss

Then yes, you should be eating more than 2000 calories a day.

i'm pretty active at work, so i usually eat 1600-1800 a day even without actual "exercise", and when i DO exercise, i usually eat at meany of my calories back as i can, even if it's around 2000 calories.

i've lost over 70 lbs in 7 months, so i'd say that it does work if you're activity level is high enough.

YES! I eat about 2300 when I workout. I have a few friends who do the same (and added them as friends because of this, I don't relate to "friends" who eat 1200 calories). A half pound a week goal puts me at 1750 without exercise. Then I burn 500 or so.... My weight loss has been slow but not that slow. 7lbs in 2 months.

Yes - I typically eat between 1900-2100 calories a day (sometimes even more) and I've lost 28 pounds between April 10th and August 16th.

I'm almost always in the 1800-2200 range, and I have lost an average of 1.1 lb/week since I started in mid-May. I do burn a lot...even eating this many calories, I sometimes don't manage to net 1200 calories. Trying to improve on that!

MFP originally had me at the regular 1200 calories a day.. then I was told that my BF was too low to eat that little so I raised it to .5 lbs a week and ate more, then I found out that I wasn't sedentary, I was lightly active so my calorie count went up again.

Each time I added more calories I started losing weight again... by eating more. I thought I was just binging and giving up but then I checked the scale and it started to go down. I added a lot more protein though so maybe you could add the extra calories in a protein shake or something to give your metabolism a boost. With the amount of calories you're burning in a day you're probably not giving yourself enough nutrients to keep burning. Because you're at a different activity level you're not going to have the same burn as everyone. You do a lot of body pump and spinning so your body's eating up your macro's at this point and wants more. I'd try it out for a bit and see what happens.

I will say, when I work out that much, I eat about 2500, and can lose.

Well. I am currently eating 2200-2500 net calories a day and maintaining my weight. However, if I increase my calories I will lose weight (I've done it and lost, but hated eating so much - so I lowered it back down and gained a few pounds back).

I work on my feet 4-5 days a week for 5-9 hours a day. I also try and go to the gym 2-3 times a week for 60 mins.

I've found that as long as I eat in my normal range - my weight doesn't move a whole lot (maybe a pound or two from water retention). If I drop below 2200, but above 2000 I will gain a few pounds - but it is VERY slowly. If I drop below 2000, I will go back up around 150lbs and will slowly gain if I continue eating under 2000 for an extended time.

I can eat 3000 calories a day and drop weight. I'm currently 143-145lbs (was 144.5 today) and when I was consuming 3000 NET calories - I got down to 141lbs. I quickly realized that eating that much is just... well, too much. So, I lowered my calories back down, gained those few pounds back and am happy and content where I am.

So, it IS possible to eat that much and lose weight. It all depends on your body, your lifestyle, etc

Everyone's body is different!!! Test your bodyfat...that would be my test. because if you are 15% body fat, then you don't have much to lose, even if you are 20% it comes off slow. remember muscle weighs more!

Fellow instructor, I burn like you 700-1200 calories in exercise. I eat between 1600-2000 calories, and losing .5/ week the last few weeks, was more like a pound a week for a while.

Test your body fat, pay the money to see a register dietian!! If you feel you are struggling, it would be money well spent.
