Maintenance Check In June 2019

@HarperAnn6 -Congrats on your incredible weight loss and for keeping it off! I definitely know what you mean about not being able to let your guard down as much as you would like. I honestly believe that is the case with almost everyone and I think that keeping that guard up is what makes maintaining possible. Unfortunately, we live in a food-centric society and the temptations to overindulge are constant. We all need to be vigilant. Maintenance can be an ongoing battle. I just try and stay focused on the improved quality of life I have from not carrying around a ton of extra weight and it makes those "sacrifices" seem like a no-brainer.3

Success/Struggles: Off the bike now until late July at the earliest. Between less activity and more time to think about eating I'm having a little trouble keeping to my calorie goal, hopefully I'll get a handle on things soon. It's unrealistic to think that I won't be sidelined with injury other times and I need to work on a strategy for coping without using food as the answer.
Wishing everyone a successful upcoming week!7 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: Nothing exciting to report. Treating myself to a turkey club sandwich from Arby’s tonight, and of course curly fries 😊 I expect things to jump a bit next week, hubby is finally home after being gone for work for 5 weeks, I’m sure my eating habits won’t be as on point as they usually are. So be it!4 -

Successes: Tracking all, getting more sleep by changing habits slowly, wt lifting 6/7 days, feeling leaner & stronger, cut sodium back, cut fat back. Muscles!
Challenges: I’m decreasing calories of what I eat, but my body seems to be much more efficient. According to my Apple Watch, I creating good deficits, but I can see my heart rate doesn’t go as high when I walk or ride exercise bike as it used to.
Since Jan 1, I’ve gained 1.44 lbs in 165 days. Works out to 30 ,calories extra per day. Better maintenance than I’ve ever done in my life, but I really feel better at 153lbs.
Continuing to adjust - in for the long haul.
Things I need to improve in June:
Continue to make baby changes to get more sleep✅
Keep watching & reducing calories ✅
Be Careful: Family visiting...for 10 days with trip for 5 of them. Got a place with a kitchen, so I could eat at “home” more. With wt on scale up, I’m definitely going to be careful.
I hope you all are doing well.
💕
Maddie
P.S. Any thoughts, suggestions, theories, tips from experienced maintainers are welcome, particularly if you switched from primarily walking to gym workouts/ex bike, treadmill & dance.
Thanks!,2 -

Thank you so much for your positive words! You are so right! The “spark” that keeps me going is thinking about how much better my life is without the weight. I think you articulated that so well in your post. You gave me a great reminder to reflect upon the quality of my life more often:)1 -

Successes/struggles: I’m finding things quite tough at the moment. Work is so hectic that keeping up the exercise routine is exhausting. But if I don’t run or train I feel frustrated and grumpy, so kind of settling for tired but calm! I’m a teacher and we have 5 weeks left until the summer break. Hoping I can just ride it out and push on them try and take better care of myself. Starting with fixing my sleep issues.

BUT, I have lost a bit more weight fell just below lower point or maintenance range this morning. For the moment, I will continue at TDEE, but may start eating a bunch more if this loss is real. I really do think 30 should be the low point of maintenance for me.4 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: Struggled with exercise this week. We were away in my motorhome for 4 nights – so driving 4.5 hours on Monday and Friday. We did a lot of walking on the 3 days between but obviously no gym work and I didn’t even do my abs and planks which I usually do every day and, to be honest, I could perfectly well do in the van – I have done before.
More success with food though. We took our own food for breakfast and cooked in the van 3 nights so I was able to include lots of veggies and fruit. On Tuesday we had trouble finding a nice café for lunch and I had to order a tuna mayo baguette but I successfully left half the bread! I scooped out the tuna and left half the baguette behind. We had a pub meal one evening and I left pasta on my plate. It was seafood linguine so I picked out the fish and prawns and left quite a bit of the pasta. We didn’t have dessert in the pub, walked back to the van and had a small bowl of strawberries and watermelon – very refreshing after creamy pasta.
Have a good week everyone!

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: Weight is way up at the very top of my range. It's been a emotional week due to multiple deaths of very healthy and fit people in their 50's One from a heart attack, one who only found out 9 months ago she had cancer and the last who did had some medical issues although was doing great the death was unexpected. I also ate out the last 3 days and 1 day it was lunch and dinner. I made good choices and brought food home so hopefully it's water weight and will come off this upcoming week.9 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: My weight has just creeped even higher this past week. Again, lots of eating out and not enough water. I just started on a mini vacation yesterday for the next week (to where I grew up, so I don't consider it a "real" vacation, but I plan to eat everything while I'm here). I managed to get in 24k steps yesterday (walking around a lot in the city). This upcoming week will be estimating everything though - meals out, food cooked at my parents' house, even scale weight (they've got a scale but it's an old non-digital scale that is pretty inaccurate). I plan to enjoy myself and not worry too much about things - I'll estimate things as accurately as I can, but won't stress about it.4 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: There was an interesting dip at the end of the week that had me as low as 158.5. While I am still seeing how my Fitbit calorie estimation lines up with reality, my educated guess is that it has to do with me forgetting to take my usual creatine supplement for 2 or 3 days in a row, possibly leading to a loss in water weight. Even so, I'm not so hot about the trend line and will be bumping up intake until I'm at least back in the low 160s this coming week.
I'm also not so hot about all the storms rolling through and messing up my outside time; even so, I'm still averaging over 20K steps a day and have been religious about my resistance and cardio. I've been channeling current lots o' stress positively into walking rather than eating, with the added benefit of entertaining the family as I walk loops around the inside of the house.
Have a great week everyone!3 -

My weight has been 154.6 or 154.8 since May 23rd. Weird to have it so regular. I don't weigh every day or use a trending app, though. I'd like to get back to around 152 but I'm not that bothered.
Successes of the week: I went to Skye. I felt like I ate a lot of cheese, scones, and whisky, but my weight seems to be pretty steady. I'm now back to my usual way of eating and feeling less bloated, and getting back into strength training after a bit of a break.
Struggle: I had a big binge on the 9th and have been trying to not let it set me back in terms of over-restricting or beating myself up. Doing OK on that front.4 -

I had my MSc thesis defense last week, so I was really nervous and I have my final exam next week so I really can't focus on my eating habits. Hopefully once it's over, everything will go back to normal. I try to make healthier choices this week, but a little ice cream here and there won't hurt, right?4 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: It looks like the extra water weight from the vacation/holidays finally came off. My weight is trending back at 116 which is where I like it. I did eat at a slight deficit most days this past week, but not a large one and I wasn't restrictive. I just did things like eat one egg at breakfast instead of two, and maybe slightly smaller portions of other things. I feel good that I know that I can eat a little less if I need to without feeling hungry or deprived. I will just keep an eye on my trend weight. If it falls below 116 then I will eat more. Maintenance really is a balance of not eating too much or too little. And I also try not to think about what I eat all the time, but at the same time stay aware of my portion sizes. For me it has definitely been harder than losing weight.
@hippiesaur Good luck on your final exam! A little ice cream won't hurt anything as long as you stay at your calorie goal. I think it is important to work in foods that you enjoy and not feel guilty about it.5 -

Successes/struggles: This was a good week. The extra weight that I noted at the beginning of the week trended down as expected and I worked hard to keep it trending in the right direction. I tracked every day this week except for Saturday, but I did not over indulge. I was over on my calorie goal a few days, but I made up for it with exercise, so I know I was above my normal TDEE. Marathon training stats this week and I am hoping I can balance out my hunger with good food choices.4 -

I really appreciate this thread. I was talking to someone on another message board about maintaining weight loss, they wanted to know how I was doing it. When I thought about it, this thread was a big part. Just having a regular time to come on and put my weight progress in text, a reason to remember to weigh every day, keeps me on top of it. Successes/struggles: Tired, overworked, probably some overtraining too. Weighed in yesterday and today forgot so posting yesterday’s weight. Taking a bit of a break from tracking and a rest day today after six quite intense days in a row. Hoping I can catch up on some sleep and re-set.
Have a good week all x6 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: family came visiting last weekend and my 4 year old grandson stayed over for two nights. He’s just learnt to ride a bike – a proper bike with no stabilisers – so I did a lot of walking/ trotting behind him, and had to carry the bike quite a bit when we were on busy roads. I clocked up a lot of steps!
Challenges this week: I’m away on holiday again – another coach trip this time and the hotel has a swimming pool. So there will be many hours of sitting still on the coach, 5 hotel breakfasts and 5 full evening meals, but I can offset that with lots of walking and hopefully fit in some swimming.
Have a good week everyone!

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: The water weight from eating out last week has come off and then a little bit more. I know it will be up the next few days going out for Chinese food today which I have never eaten before. Now that I lost weight I am getting more daring (for me anyways) trying new things whether food or activities. I think that would a great question to post on the success board I might just do that. Another happy note my daughter's boyfriend ask my hubby to marry my daughter last Sunday, now if it happens is another story they have a strange relationship so we shall see.6 -

<153? No
Successes:
Tracking all, getting more sleep by changing habits slowly, low bp, fit in skinny jeans.
Successful in dropping average calories in June to 145 fewer per day than in May!!
Continuing to adjust to maintenance - in for the long haul, but not out of the woods yet.
Dropped from 30 to 24 avg extra calories per day for 2019.
I FEEL GREAT!!
Challenges:
Still nervous, but trying to turn it around gradually. May consider dieting based upon how things are in mid-July.
Since Jan 1, I’ve gained 1.17 lbs in 173 days. Works out to 24 calories extra per day. Better maintenance than I’ve ever done in my life, but I really feel better at 153lbs.
Trends are looking slightly better. This encourages me to continue my approach.
Things I need to improve in June:
Continue to make baby changes to get more sleep✅
Keep watching & reducing calories ✅
When recovered from illness, resume exercise program. If wt goes up again, and skinny jeans still fit, consider adjusting goal range slightly.
Be Careful: Family visiting...for 10 days with trip for 5 of them. Got a place with a kitchen, so I could eat at “home” more. With wt on scale up, I’m definitely going to be careful.
I hope you all are doing well.
💕
Maddie
Thanks!
