Ok, so I've been a member since Jan 27 of this year. I paid the $468.89 for a year and off I went. The only complaints I had were about the trainer Reef, that signed me up. I wasn't working at the time, and I told him i was going to call my husband to see if we could afford it. He snorted and said, "You need your husbands premission? C'mon! You've been fat long enough." 1 My husband was the only one working, 2 I just had a baby you Fu*king *kitten*. So I reported him, and off I went.

I admit, the first week, it was 110%. next and for a few months, maybe 40%. Then, I started kicking my *kitten* about a month before joining MFP and did every day up untill last week when I got hired at Panda Express. I am the night shift. 5 pm to 12-1am. I can't work out there anymore. They close at 12am, and I thought about getting up at 3 am, (running on maybe 1.5-2 hours sleep) getting there by 4am, work out for an hour so I can shower and make my husband lunch at 6 am, take him to work at 7, but then our daughter tends to stay up after we get home.

I had used my kids klub there once, and it was nerve racking!!! the woman supposed to be watching my daughter was out on the floor! I was concidering trying it again, but mine doesn't open till 4pm on weekdays. This weekend we're moving, so no gym either.

So, I went into LA Fitness today to cancel my membership. If I'm not going to be able to make it for the next 5 months, I want a refund. The chick at the desk says since I paid in full, I can't cancle since where I'm moving there is a gym within 25 miles. I explained several times I would not be able to make it, AT ALL, and she says,"Well, for $35.00 I can freeze your account until you want to come back." I CAN'T WORK OUT HERE ANYMORE DUE TO MY SCHEDUAL!!!!! I asked how that makes since that they can keep the rest of my money if I'm not even going to use it? They told me that my contract isn't for usage, but for payments.

F**K LA FITNESS!!!!

and also, to the trolls down there and future ones, I didn't join cause of the friendly staff, I joined cause I needed help from equiptment, and It was the only gym colse to me, so I wouldn't have to go 15+ miles.

Normally those front desk people can't do anything. Ask to speak with a manager. If he/she won't do anything then ask to contact corporate.

Also, it's ridiculous they think anyone would drive 25 miles to a gym. lol I would maybe drive 10 MAX but 25? NO WAY!

Ahhh...You need to be an add for my gym, Planet Fitness....where if they screw you, it is a lot cheaper than 468.89.

This isn't unique to that gym. When you sign up for a year, they usually give you a preferred rate. If you read your contract, it probably says your payment is non-refundable.

Sorry, but that's just how it works, even if it seems unfair.

WOW... Im sorry, I would be irate.... maybe get in touch with a corporate office or something? Idk.... I went to planet fitness, and to be honest owuld never ever pay up front fees because you never know what life will throw at you. I paid just $`10 / month and cancelling when igot pregnant was easy.
I hope there is a way to get your money back.

I've read many a horror story online of people trying to get out of gym memberships for perfectly legit reasons...and it's nearly impossible to do. Hope you're able to find a way.

P.S. That trainer sounds like a complete tool.

she was the new manager. -_-' totally lame. the manager that was there when I first started was awesome and told me to talk to him if anything like this happened, but he got fired for some reason a few months ago. probably for being the only decent one there

So you signed up at a gym that called you fat on your first day and then doubted your judgement as a woman.

Sounds like you completely made the right choice by signing up with them. I'm surprised that they wouldn't give you your money back after they've shown their customer service skills to be stellar.

    Shocking.

thank you for the kind words. you would probably be a great trainer there. and again, if you cant say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Few years ago I had problem with Bally's cause they didn't believe me that I was moving back overseas and we sure don't have any of their gyms back here ;) Luckily I also canceled my credit card, so they couldn't charge it anymore.
I actually sent them my phone bill that had my home address to prove them that I really lived here. I added a note saying that "Don't worry, it's already paid so you don't have to" ;)

So I'm not going to join any gym like that ever again in any continent.

The real problem here is that you signed a contract for a twelve month term. Now you want out and are bad mouthing them up and down when - you signed the contract. Your work schedule changing is none of the company's concern. If you don't have time to watch Gray's Anatomy anymore, your cable company isn't going to say "Oh! Totally understand, here's your money back!"

Your location changing but still being within the 25 miles required by said contract is something you agreed to when you signed. In addition, I believe the terms for cancellation require you to send a written request to the headquarters in California including the documentation required for a permitted early termination which... it doesn't seem you qualify for.

Seems to me this can be chalked up to a lesson learned in reading a contract before agreeing to it.

I just had a horrible experience there too!

I paid in full for me & my mother for the entire year, as well as for 2 kids in the kids club.

Issue #1 - My daughter fell and bit through her lip 3 times.... where were the babysitters? My daughter is a monkey, jumps, climbs, is just plain fearless... but after the 3rd time, I spoke to the manager.

The very next week I got pulled out of my workout because my son had bit someone. As I was asking the babysitter what happened she just kept tapping the sign the said NO BITING POLICY. Turned out, my son was trying to watch TV with some older boys and they were pushing him onto the floor calling him a baby... eventually because NO ONE was stopping it (watching because they were able to tell me what happened) My son bit the other kid. I got banned but not the other family. I don't think biting is right IN ANY SITUATION... but I probably would have bit the bully too if my "teacher" wasn't helping me!

It took me over a MONTH to get the corporate office to refund my $$, and it wasn't even the full amount when all was said and done. I am now at the Ten X club and very happy, SMALLER kid care apparently equals better.

So SORRY you were screwed by them too.

I suspect part of a gym's business plan is to get as many people as possible to sign up for a year, regardless of whether that is the right decision for the individual. If you're leaving anyway they have no reason to be nice to you at all, sadly.

I cancelled a 24 Hour Fitness gym membership by saying I was moving out of the country. You have to think of irrefutable things that cannot be argued for maximum efficiency.

yea, the kids club was AWFUL!! When i brought my daughter in so I could go work out, a kid a year or so older just hit her on the head in front of the sitter. if she wasnt there i'd spank the brat. and then, half way into the work out, i see her just strolling though the floor, shootin the breeze with people. I don't care if i paid $5 or $500 for her to watch my kid, she wasnt watching my kid! the added fact that there are older kids there that arent cut off from infants and todlers is horrifing. bigger kids dont know how eaisly hurt they can get.

I joined a gym decades ago and they harrassed me constantly to pay their ridiculous fees. I've been a home gym fan ever since. I never have to wait for equipment, it's open 24x7 and it's easy to get to. Hearing stories like this makes me wonder how they stay in business. What a crappy business model.
