Does anyone else suffer from this? I do and it’s frustrating and scary.

Are you taking any medications that contribute to this, like Ambien? If so, seek an alternative.0

I do it. When my kids lived at home they would put "mom don't eat this" notes on things they didn't want me to get into in the middle of the night and that helped. Especially, anything sweet (think chocolate cake on the countertop) is fair game so we (my husband and I) make it a point to put anything like that out of sight. I won't go looking for food but if it is out where I can see it I am all over it. And I frequently won't remember the next day. And no I don't take medication either - I have been doing this since i was a little kid and I am 56 years old.

Before bed I’ll make sure everything is put away, or thrown out. I vaguely remember spitting something bitter into the sink in the middle of the night last night ... so that obviously I tried drinking something. There has been times I awoke spitting lotion in the sink, dreaming I was drinking water. I used to just eat food, now I’m getting scared with these other things. It’s extremely frustrating when I wake up and find bread bags and chip bags empty or half eaten.

Have you seen a specialist? I am so glad my parasomnias are rather benign.0

sounds like it may be progressing and i would also be worried if i were you. what if you can't find what you want and decide to go outside looking for it or getting in the car to go to the store for it? there was a pretty famous local celebrity here who for years talked about being a sleep eater. one nite they found him dead under his balcony. (it was only 2 stories up so likely not suicide) they never released the cause of death (beside the obvious) but i always wondered if he was up sleep eating and went over the balcony in one of his episodes looking for food and in his sleep state, didn't realize the balcony was a balcony. good idea seeing someone. i just don't know what kind a doctor you need for this. i guess start with your GP1

maybe you could shut the door to where you sleep and put a bell hanging on the door knob or put something in front of the door that makes you really have to work to get out. it may be enough to wake you and stop you

Only happened to me once and I gave myself a mild case of food poisoning because I cooked chicken. I remember how weirded out I felt the next day when I realized it had not all been a dream. I can't imagine living with it continuously.
I hope you can find a solution.0 -
I’ve dealt with this during periods of my life where I was under a lot of stress. It almost ended a friendship with an old roommate when I accused her of eating my food when I was at work - turns out I had eaten the entire box of cereal the night before in my sleep.
I do take sleep aids now which helped and have gotten better at managing stress.1 -
My son does due to his narcolepsy medication. As funny as it can be, it’s also frightening. He could easily choke. He’s found himself slumped over counters, etc.

Ive been struggling with night eating for several years now. It is SO frustrating to have done a great job all day only to wake up and realise that you've eaten enough calories overnight to destroy your deficit for DAYS. I wish there was something i could do to get it in check. I take a sleeping pill at night/.0
