    What Taso said.

Go to a running store and have your gait analyzed. They will give you the appropriate shoe for you.

Go to a running store and have your gait analyzed so you know exactly what kind of shoes to get. It is worth it to pay more for really good shoes. Not every shoe works for every person. You'll know the right one as soon as you get it on your foot.

I was just reading an article in Competitor Magazine (www.competitor.com) that ranked the top 25 fitness shoes for the fall. I'm partial to Reebock myself, however. And the lighter the better.

Your best bet is to go to a reputable running store and get fitted. They can even examine your stride, etc, as you run around the store. There are so many different shoes out there-they can figure out if you have a pronation/over-pronation problem, the exact cushioning, arch support...I could go on and on. Been running for years and still changing things up! My favorites are Brooks adrenalines (for 8+ mile runs) and Ravenas for shorter. I also run in minimal shoes, so you can play with it too and see what you like. I can't wear nike b/c they are too wide for me. Some Mizunos are too firm...Have fun and good luck!

They're not more expensive than anywhere else. The fittings are free. And you're getting a great value, because you can bring the shoes back, weeks later, after wearing them, if they turn out that they're not working for you.

In the long run, it may well be cheaper than doctor visits and MRIs....

You don't have to have money.... they do it for FREE  And, after I went in and get fitted, I went home and compared pricing. The best deal I could find was only $5 less than what they were asking. Another friend told me to get fitted, then figure out what the previous year's model of the same shoe was. You can find those new on ebay for a significant amount less.

In my experience the shoes cost about the same no matter where you get them (at least for decent running shoes). I paid about $90 for mine from a local running store. Money well spent!

You can go to a running store to get your gait analyzed for free. They will tell you what type of gait you have and what the best types of shoes are for you. Then price them anywhere....even Amazon if you know your size. I supinate, so I run in the Asics gel line. No one shoe is best for everyone.
