Apple Watch help

I received an Apple Watch series 3 today and am wondering if you can connect the watch and MFP app to be able to reflect the same. Like my app says I’ve only taken 500 steps but my watch says over 1000. I want everything to be as accurate as possible and I can’t quiet seem to figure this out.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I had to go into the health app on my phone and make sure MFP was turned on. Then it got the correct info from my watch.0
