Heart Rate going over your MAX

I have a question is it a good thing to always go over your MAX target heart rate or should I always try to stay within my zone. My highest target is 160 but I am always going over that always in the high 160s to 170s and sometimes I am in the 180s. Is this good or bad????

  • It's okay to go over your max. Go by perceived exertion...do you feel like you are going to die if you are over your max, or does it just feel like you are working really hard? You obviously don't want to stay over-max for the entire workout, but certainly for periods of time it is okay.

I usually am the same way, but just figured I was fine unless I felt like I couldn't breath. Usually the higher your heart rate is during exercise the more calories you burn!

Yeah, I go up in the 170s when I do a HIIT. Been up in the 180s but I try to avoid that now.

I have read that after working out over you Max for a while it can be bad. I consider I did that during my Insanity workouts which pushed me into an anebolic threshold.

Technically, the max hr that you calculate from your age is an estimate, and if you went over it and didn't die, then your actual max hr is higher than you think. (To find your real max hr, there are a series of stress tests that a sports therapist or md can do, but I've never done them).
