OK so I am reading an article and to save calories you replace the oil in your brownie mix with 1/4 c puree beets and a can of puree black beans.... has anyone tried this... sounds kinda gross to me.

Beets= nasty. I can't imagine the flavor those brownies would have.
Black beans I can totally see-- a good chocolate would overpower the flavor and they would add moisture and fiber. Win-win!0 -
Done it (black beans) and it works, actually. Doesn't taste bad at all!! Apple sauce can work too.
I still add a bit of powdered sugar on top. It keeps them sweeter without adding gobs of calories.0 -
I've done it with applesauce and with pumpkin. For applesauce I replaced only the oil. Using pumpkin I replaced everything (oil, egg, etc). Applesauce was great but nutritional value not great. Pumpkin is much better for you but I'd recommend adding a little peanut butter or something but, it's pretty good.0

Beets are actually really sweet. I use them in smoothies and shredded salad.
Shredded carrot would work, too. Both of them are very sweet "root fruit".0 -
You puree the beets and it's not bad at all. The chocolate flavor takes over. I baked cupcakes, both gluten free and vegan, for a local bistro for a while. Even though I'm not vegan or gluten free, I have to say, they were really moist and delicious! Many of the recipes call for applesauce or pumpkin instead of oil. Now when I bring cupcakes to events and parties, I always use a recipe that is oil free and vegan, no one ever knows the difference and they are gone in minutes. Hope that helps!0

I have no idea toward the brownies but what i do recommend to anyone are black beans.
The fiber and calcium they provide are excellent and they go good with turkey/ham and eggies.
I like them.0 -
I just made black bean brownies this morning. They're delicious, and guilt-free.0

AS has been said, applesauce is a pretty good substitute for oil. There are lots of black bean brownie recipes out there, so I'm not surprised that's a suggested substitute. As for beets, never tried it for replacing oil, but I absolutely love fresh beets that have been baked - sweet and delicious. So I can see how they might work.0

I use nonfat yoghurt instead of oil when baking muffinsvand breads. Usually works grat! Greek yoghurt is even better!0

I've tried chocolate cake with beets in and it was yuk you could really taste the beets. I like beets as they are but in a chocolate cake they were just awful. the worst cake i've ever had. Never tried the blackbeans in cakes though.0

Thanks! I think I will try the black beans, apple sauce and pumkin. (Never thought of pumpkin.) The beets just scare me and on a good day make me yack. :sick:0
