Exercising

Hi I’m new member. Due to health reasons, I’m past 75, I cannot exercise except for walk. So each day I try to walk a little more than the day before if possible. I also do housework as much as I can. Today I have so far received 995 steps which for me isn’t too bad but not great! But I don’t give up!

That's great . . . every step counts. I remember getting my Fitbit and realizing how little I actually walked and was amazed at how many steps just doing everyday things with some mindful thinking can add up to. Keep up the good work!!!

That’s great! Just keep trying to up your steps every day by 10 or 20 more. If you measure it, you could just walk around the house to meet your next goal. Good luck!

As long as you're exercising in a way that's healthy and safe for your body, any amount of exercise is great. Health guidelines recommend about 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, so one goal could be to work up to three 10 minute walks each day. (https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/physical-activity-guidelines-older-adults/, https://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/factsheet_olderadults/en/)

If it's safe for you, adding strength training would be another good goal. You don't need to worry about lifting heavy weights or anything like that--bodyweight exercises count, and are a great place to start. Here is a strength training plan that may be appropriate for you: https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/downloads/growing_stronger.pdf

    Hi and welcome, Cookit1!

You have a good frame of mind, very inspirational. B)

Back when I first began here, walking was really all that I could mentally bring myself to do. It's something I've been able to keep at and I'm so thankful for it.
