Why does my gut feel flatter after I rest a few days

I’m taking a few days off from lifting weights and my gut feels flatter. However I’ve been eating the same which is too much. Why is that? Perhaps it’s just my imagination.

When you are lifting your muscles are constantly retaining a bit of extra water for repair. That is evident all over your body, not just the muscles worked, including the abdomen. When you take a couple of rest days, that finally clears out. Just my uneducated guess.3

A lot of lifts also engage your core, so it checks out that you'd have some water retention there for muscle repair. It's also why your biceps may look puffy after a good workout. Often people find they lose a couple pounds if they don't workout for a couple of days too.1

Depending on how much time you spend exercising each day, a mere 1-2 hours difference resting/parasympathetic state can make a noticeable difference short term2
