How does the HRM tell you how many calories you have burned?

You set it up with your gender, height, weight etc and you wear a chest strap to measure your heart beat while exercising & it computes it from that.0

What do you mean? Do you mean how does the HRM know how many calories you've burned or where do you go in the HRM menus to see how many calories you burned?0

I thought the HRM only told you what your heart rate was at the time you were working out...but Im guessing tells you the calories burned too??!!0 -
Yeah, it'll track your average HRM, and your peak. It also gives you calories burned. And mine stores like 4 workouts I think. I have the FT4. My husband got the FT7 and it stores more.0

My model (Polar FT4) has a chest strap that I wear that has electrodes (right word?) that takes my heart rate and transmits it to the watch I wear that displays my heart rate. I programmed the watch with my age, height, sex, age so it could do the math and figure my calorie burn based off my actual heart rate.

i have the polar ft4...it does all that i need it to do which is calculate my calories burned..if your wanting more information or more detail i say go with the ft7 but im a simplistic kind of girl and this one is def simplistic..i love it best investment ever..i actually look forward ot working out to see how many calories im going ot burn!0

Mine is an FT4. I got it off Amazon for $58. My husband got a FT7 for about $100 I think, also off Amazon. His has more bells and whistles but FT4 fits my needs.0 -

The FT4 is "water resistant" which means you can wear it to swim but you shouldn't press the buttons while in the water. Some of the more expensive ones are completely water proof I think.0 -
i have the polar ft4...it does all that i need it to do which is calculate my calories burned..if your wanting more information or more detail i say go with the ft7 but im a simplistic kind of girl and this one is def simplistic..i love it best investment ever..i actually look forward ot working out to see how many calories im going ot burn!

Ok I see. Different HRMs do different things. You definately want one with a chest strap because It's more accurate. I got one that's just the watch 6 months ago and I went and bought a new one yesturday because I want a chest strap. I JUST got a Polar FT7 (I've heard good things about them). I got it at MC Sports for $109.00 plus tax.
The Polar FT7 is water resisant. You don't want to go diving with it but you can where it while swimming in a pool. It will tell me (according to the instructions-I'm using it for the first time later tonight) my current HR, the percent I am to my max heart. It automatically calculates the max heart based on age, weight, etc-which I don't think is the most accurate way but it will do. It will also tell me if my heart rate is in "fat burning" mode or "fitness improval mode." fat burning is lower and at this rate the body burns more stored fat than carbs. Fitness mode is good to but it's more about vascular health and burns more carbs (recently eaten ones) than fat.
That's what the manual says anyways. I'm excited to use it. After the workout it will give me a summary of that info. It does other stuff too but i'm mostly interested in calories burned and how hard I'm working (heart rate and % to max)
Polar has cheaper ones too. FT4 is less expensive but I don't know much about it or what the difference is between that one and this one. There was an FT40 that was $179 and I couldn't tell the difference between that one and the one I got either, lol.0 -

FT7 you shouldn't push the buttons water either***0 -
I just got a Polar FT4 and I like it very much I don't think the Polar FT1 and FT2 calculates your calorie burn so if that's the main purpose you should stay away from those.0
