Hi, I am Janice and my husband and I live in Mazatlan Mexico as we retired there from the state of Washington. We are up in Washington right now visiting our children and grandchildren. Last Sunday my husband had a stroke and we brought him to ER. He was in the hospital for 2 days before he got transferred to a Rehab Hospital. He has had lots of therapy and we all believe he will have a successful recovery. However, while all the test came back, he now has high cholesteral, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and is overweight. While in rehab, they have had him on a Diabetic diet which will control the above mentioned problems.

A friend reccomended this site and I have joined to help both my husband and I now to begin a new healthy life style. Does the way this tracks what is eaten cover a diabetic way of eating?
Janice

Sorry to hear about your husband, it must be very hard. you can make this site track what you need... get to know the site and change the diary to suit YOU. try and get a few diabetic friends for extra support. I have pcos, insulin resistance. fell free to add me as a friend...

Wow - I'm sorry to hear this happened to you, but it's great that you're jumping in and making the changes you need to make. The site isn't GEARED to diabetics, but it can certainly be tweaked to support your efforts. For example, the default ratio on the Carbs / Fat / Protein is probably a little high on carbs for a diabetic - get the appropriate ratios from the doctor and adjust accordingly. Same with the sodium. The default is 2500 mg per day, which is high if you're on a sodium restricted diet to reduce blood pressure. Again, you can manually adjust your goals to line up with the medical advice and support your efforts.

Good luck to you and your husband as you tackle these changes in lifestyle to restore health.

    Hello and welcome.

I'm new as well, this week, and I'm happy you have found it too. You will receive a wealth of information and inspiration. I would highly suggest performing a "SEARCH" within this site, for diabetes, or any question you have. (for me the search button is about 5 inches down from the top of the page in the middle).

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, but from it came a new beginning to better health for both of you.

I wish you two a long, wonderful, happy, healthy life together.
  • Thank you for the suggestion of being able to alter the carbs/sodium etc. I don't know what they are going to put him on yet. I meet with the nutrionalist on Tuesday and then I'm sure I'll have a clearer idea. I haven't notice where I could go to change the amount of carbs etc. If it's a easy fix, could you explain how to do it.

In settings you can change the nutritional values you want tracked on your "food" page, and at the bottom of that "food" page is a button below the water consumption "view full report" and that will give you a full report of Calories, Carbs, Fat, Protein, Cholesterol, Sodium, Sugars, Fiber.

I'm sure there are many more tweaks others will pitch in, I look forward to learning also.

    Have a pleasant evening.
