Walk everywhere you possibly can. If it’s less than a mile, I don’t get the car out. I walk to yoga, barbell gym, doctor, coffee shop, restaurants, movies, and several places I volunteer.
I’m waiting with baited breath for the new Lidl to open up 1.5 miles away. Then I’ll be investing in a great wheeled cart and bumping up my “no car” threshold.
Of everything I do (yoga,Pilates, running, weight training) walking is the most effective, the least expensive, and the one that’s most likely to impact my old age. And it’s simply the easiest most mindless, and most accessible 24/7. Except for those crosswalks. Gotta pay attention there. Those drivers will glare at you as they seriously consider mowing your *kitten* down.3

Set your life around activity instead of inactivity. Walk if you can, ride if you can’t walk, drive only if you can’t do either of those. Park far away from the store. Make working out part of your routine not a senetence you have to carry out. Change your relationship with exercise3

Be consistent. Doing some formnof exercise/activity on a regular, consistent basis is better than being a “weekend warrior.”2

Unfortunately, it's like many/most desirable end-states: You have to focus some time and attention on it, learn enough about it to use your time wisely and avoid injury, take appropriate steps toward the fitness goals, be persistent, devote time to it while still keeping good overall life balance (enough time for other important things), and hang in there working on it steadily for a long time . . . for a lifetime, ideally.
There really aren't "weird tricks" or shortcuts.
Fortunately, if you choose activities wisely (things you enjoy doing), it's fun.
And typically it makes you feel better, more able to do daily life chores and fun stuff, recover better from illness/injury, minimize risks for a range of common medical conditions (thus reduce probability of needing various medications, nearly all of which have side effects, especially once you're taking multiples that interact), may help avoid an early permanent move to assisted living facilities, and much, much more.

short answer: Read the most helpful stickies a the top of each forum. Pretty much every topic asked here is covered there in one form or another.
I gave that answer because "Staying in shape" is just waaay too broad a statement. Strength? Endurance? Light and lean or large and lean? Fire hydrant body but strong as an ox? Can run 10 miles without breathing heavy? All can be considered "In shape."
Could you narrow your goals/ideas down a bit?1
