God Help Me, Please

Hi. My name is Julie. I'm 53 years old and need to lose 50 lbs. I'm struggling to do so because of a couple health issues and medication. Yep, some medications cause weight gain and thus prevent weight loss.
I feel like I'll always be on an uphill battle, but I know God will see me through this journey. I cannot help myself on this one and apparently neither can any doctor.
God helps those who cannot help themselves, not just those who can.
I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hi Julie, My wife who is approximately your age was in a similar situation. She was helped immensely by consulting a dietitian (nutritional specialist) about every 2 weeks. She lost about 50lbs, thus it was money very well spent.
It is totally true that most doctors will only treat your illness, and you need to find someone like a life coach or dietitian if you want support for you health.
Best wishes for a healthy life!4 -

Agree! But, make sure it is a Registered Dietitian. They have to have the RD designation. This means they did their university degree and completed their stages in clinical settings. RD is a protected designation. Anyone and their grandma can say they are a nutritionalist (spelling)... Anyways, find one that has a strong tract record and who specializes with body transformations under your conditions.

This is not true in every place.
In my state there are no educational differences between Nutritionist and Dietician. Same education, same State licensing.
It may be true where you are, I agree.
To the person posting this thread:
Medications don't make yo gain weight nor make it impossible to lose weight. Depending on what it is, there may be a different medication to try that may have fewer side effects, but weight loss comes down to taking in fewer calories than you use every day, over time.
Start by logging your food here every day. Set your Goals to, "Lose 1 pound per week," like the setup guide suggests. Set your "Activity level" honestly.
Then be consistent. In 4-6 weeks you'll see if you are eating at the right calorie level to lose one pound per week.
It's no different than what all of us have to do. Medications may make you feel lethargic or tired or increase appetite, but there is still a level of calories that will have you losing weight.
Time to get started. Prayer optional, but important.4 -
Saying you can't help yourself just removes the responsibility. Not even God can help you if you refuse to accept that your life is in your hands.
There are hundreds of people on MFP right now with serious illnesses and on drugs with debilitating side effects that are still making weight loss happen through hard work. What's your excuse?16 -
God gave every one of us freewill. It's up to us to choose what to do with it. You CAN do this. I'm 54 and was near death last April because of my health and obesity. I have lost 62 lbs so far. One step , one calorie at a time.6

Right now you’ve been guided to this board. Most of us are here counting calories. Agree with cmriverside, there’s a number that will work for you. You just have to find it.
Start with the calculator to find a number to lose .5 lbs per week, start a food diary, crunch the numbers using a food scale and try to hit your number. If the medicine messes up the numbers, cut some calories. But don’t make radical cuts, you have to live with it.
Don’t be distressed if the calculations and gadgets don’t give you the right numbers. Go your own way. Trial and error will find your number. Keep working.
I lost 100+ lbs and have kept it off for 13 years. I started with a prayer too. Keep trying.5 -
Copying my response from your other post...
If you do not feel like you are able to achieve your goals yourself, I’m perplexed why you are posting here on MFP?
Thousands of members have faced challenges due to weight and health issues, but if you do not feel you are responsible for your own success then I predict you will not be successful.
Medications don’t cause weight gain or prevent weight loss. Your consumption of too many calories caused the weight gain and are preventing you from losing.
Read the stickied most helpful forum posts. So many people started here just like you, thinking they were destined to fail or that other factors were preventing them from losing the weight. There are dozens of threads posted which have advice and tips on how to be successful and that includes accepting that this really is within your control.
Best of luck.

While its true, medication does not prevent weight loss, but, it can increase appitite (yeah I cant spell, but I am fine with that). Anyways, you need to control that aspect. And while what most of these people are saying is correct, they should use more decorum in presenting their answers. (although some make me laugh). be kind people.6

Take one day at a time - make it a goal to make your workout (whatever it is) and your daily calorie goal. Aim for slow progress each week - 0.5-1 pound weight loss is moving in the right direction. Have faith that you can do this - Good luck1 -
