Help. I am stress eating big time or eating because I am tired or both. Any tips on how to get my mind off the food and my mouth shut.

Chew some gum, go for a walk, clean house. I get like that sometimes. Step away from the food.
  • eating because you're tired? Go to sleep if you're tired, eat if you're hungry.

Hey, I'm the same. You need to try finding other ways to deal with stress. I've lately sussed out that eating for me has replaced self-harm, which I used to do some years back, when I'm stressed or p'ed off. Ironically, I have few scars from the self harm- strech marks galore from the eating. Lesson: binge eating IS self harm.

You need to identify what it is about eating that relieves your stress. For me, I tend to eat sugary foods, or processed carbs, which give me an energy surge and release endorphins. I also binge eat in a very agreessive way- tearing and chomping and gulping in a way I don't eat normal meals. Again, this links into the self harm behaviour.
So, now I try to exercise, or beat up on a pillow, or talk/write it out (okay, sometimes, it's a rant). Same release of endorphines, same outpouring of agression/frustration- just in a much healthier way. (Though if you go for the ranting, select your victim- I mean, listener- carefully. lol.)

I'm not saying this will work for you. You may prefer the more relaxing route- a book, favourite TV show, a bath. But with stress eating, any sort of emotion driven eating, it's not enough to resist the temptation. Willpower can only last so long if you don't address the underlying issues.

It really comes down to mind over matter. I also eat when I am bored and sometimes stressed, but mostly bored. Drink some water, take a walk, try to find a hobby to keep your hands busy...like knitting, reading or crocheting, working a puzzle... If you are really, truly hungry, then eat, but most of the time, at least for me, it is out of boredom.:flowerforyou:

I am an artsy person so I start drawing or painting or listening to music and sing... just do something with your hands other than grab that fridge or pantry door. If you are sitting move, when i sit and watch a TV program or a movie I get munchy. Chewing gum is a great suggestion too! Buy different flavors of the sugar free gum so it isn't just the mint, like fruity flavors help me sometimes... and drink water!!
  • Thank you for the tips. I think I will stock up on suger free gum and maybe a journal. Thanks again.

When I stress hard, and feel like I need to stop it, I usually sit down and either think on the causes, or sit down with the wife and talk about the causes.

when you really focus on the stress points, and what will happen after in your life, usually it puts it in the proper perspective. When you have a grip on what will happen after the stress point, then you usually can handle it a lot easier.

If it's an ongoing stress factor (like maybe a young child or lack of money for example), best to let out the feelings to a trusted friend or maybe a therapist, talking out chronic stress is a proven method of relieving it (in part).

One other thing to remember is that stress manifests and thrives in situations where you refuse to overtly acknowledge a problem or issue. Acknowledge your issues, focus your energy on resolution, and the stress is usually diminished.
  • I can usually drink a cup or two of coffee, and that will help me with the eating. I eat out of boredom, or just because something tastes good. I know it is totally frustrating.
