What is the best way to get the Potassium and Sodium that you need? I've only been at this a few days, but already I can see a pattern of not getting enough of either in my diet.

I take Potassium vitamins to get my daily recommendation of that... Sodium, well... I don't like to have too much of that. LOL

If you can't get enough potassium from food, try a suppliment. Do you have a sodium deficiency?

Count yourself lucky if you have less than the recommended sodium. I can't stay under to save me.
  • That was my first thought too, but the sugar is so high. Guess I have to give up the regular Coke. Switching to Green Tea today.
    Thanks for the input.

Good sources of potassium are tomatoes, potatoes (white and sweet), oranges, beet greens, white beans, raisins, dates,
clams, and yoghurt. I wouldn't worry about sodium as you should get enough from natural occurring sodium in foods. The 2,500mg is the maximum. Women over 50 should consume 1,500mg or less. You really only need 500mg/day for your body to function properly. I keep mine about 1,000mg/day.

Edit: though bananas are a source of potassium they are not one of the top ten and they're high in sugar.

And most definitely stop drinking any and all sodas!
  • Yeah, I know, it sounds dumb doesn't it. I guess I didn't realize that I was low on sodium. So I'm trying to figure out a good healthy source.

Beet greens, white beans, avocado, and potatoes all have higher levels of potassium than bananas, and less sugar.

    Oh sneezies, you rascal.

Thanks for the post! I feel much better now. Tomato is one of my favorite foods and knowing that I don't need to meet the Max on Sodium is a huge relief. Soda has left my home forever after seeing how it affects the totals.
  • Wow! This Message Board thing is great! Y'all are so kind to be responding and it's so fast too. I'm thinking this MFP may be just the thing I need to get healthy and fit.
    Thanks Y'all

If anyone would like a new "Friend" I could use some regular input.

Don't forget that not all the food on the MFP lists have the correct data for minerals. Because they are added by members and not all foods have the full nutritional data that we would like, it is easy to get hung up about different things. When I first started, I was really worried about my iron and calcium levels, could never reach the recommended levels, but then I realised that mostly, it's just that the data isn't there.

I work to keep the potassium up and the sodium down. Potassium in my diet most often comes from spinach, watermelons and honeydew melons, bananas, and oranges, along with other fruit like peaches and nectarines. Occasionally, I'll toss in a potato, which is great for potassium, too.

Coconut water, radishes, and broccoli are pretty high in potassium. Radishes especially. =)

depending on where u r there is something called no salt, kinda pricey, and it is around the other seasonings. i use it because i have hbp and the main ingredient is potassium and not sodium
  • Thanks! that's a great solution.
