I've just recently taken up running - this being last week  Just wondering what other experiences everyone has had with running and the effect it had on their weight loss.

I'm hoping running will help me drop those kg's that move so slowly normally.

I have been running for a few months and love it! I have never been a runner, and I am still pretty slow, but getting there. I read a great book when I first got started called Run Your Butt Off! Great information! I can't believe the difference it has made in my body! One thing I can recommend is to get a good pair of shoes :)

I love to run and it really helps me feel better. Only problem is make sure you start and build up slowly. I pushed it a little hard recently and my hip flexors are killng me :(

in my experience running is the best way to shed unwanted body fat. If you can sustain a steady pace for long periods of time, the pounds will melt right off.

It is better to go slow and steady on a regular basis to build up your speed and stamina (run at aerobic threshold, about 60% of your max heart rate), rather than going all out one day and being too sore to run again for the next few days. You will also notice you can run faster and farther each week.

You mentioned soreness, make sure you stretch thoroughly before your run, and after, you should cool down by continuing slow, steady movement to work out all the lactic acid from your legs, and also stretch focusing on your sore areas.

Note: One problem with distance running is that it does burn your upper body muscle as well, but this is only a real problem if you are going distances in excess of 5 miles regularly, and neglecting muscle training entirely.

Best of luck, excited to hear about your progress

I too have started to get back into running. I use to do it way back in high school (half a lifetime ago). I'm really enjoying it.

I also have the nike+ for ipod, and I love it. Not only can i listen to my ipod, but it tracks how fast I'm running, as well as how long I have run etc. (best $25 I spent).

today my goal was to run 3k's. Took 19:24mins.

A good trick with increasing your distance is to do it 500m at a time.

Do you have a distance in mind?

I have been running now for 3 weeks (I got 3 times per week, training for a 5k in 3 weeks time) and I use this:
    http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/racing/six-week-beginner-5k-schedule/67.html
    As a general guide.
It's good for beginners and it's also a great way to build yourself up at a steady pace and it allows you to have a incentive to stick to. Once I complete the 5k, I will strive for a better time then move onto to a 10k training plan.

I must say I love running and although I have only been running for 3 weeks, I can see a difference already and whats more, it makes you feel great!
    Good luck!

I love running, well jogging as I am so slow, but its the best exercise I have found for weight loss. Its also great as you can challenge yourself and set goals, and will see noticeable differences in your fitness, something that I really like as I get a bit bored with my gym routine sometimes. Its also really versatile and I find it easier to fit into my life. At Christmas I restarted at 1 minute on 2 off as I found it easier to measure my time rather than distance. I kept going until I was increasing the minutes running and decreasing the walk breaks. You will hit a point when you can just keep going and and now I'm doing 7 miles non stop and I can now do speed work and hill and interval training. Keep it up, you are doing great and soon you will be addicted!
