Hi

I have been using this site for a month now and love it. I had a concern and was seeking some comments from they members. I used to do Windsor pilates about 2 yrs ago and my abs would hurt. But now ( i delivered a baby a year ago, and my tummy is really flabby) when i do the same excercise i feel no pain in my abs. Also i tried Jillian's Shred in 30 days video level one.... my thighs hurt but no pains in the ab.... what's going on? Am i not doing something right? or is my tummy too flabby to feel pain??? My husband says no pain no gain, and i really want to lose the flabby tummy.... help!!!

It sounds like your ab muscles in are in pretty good shape! This is why they're not sore after you use them a lot.

The "flabby tummy" part will go away with cardio. You have to burn that off.

I'm not sure why you aren't feeling it, maybe you need to do more difficult ab work, regardless, you don't lose stomach fat by doing ab exercises, so doing ab work won't help with your stomach fat (not really anyway), all it will do is give you more defined abs under that same layer of fat.

Maybe you should try another approach...a ball, a bosu (god, if you don't feel pain after using a bosu ball, you have abs of steel  )....

Also, the best way to get rid of belly flab is cardio...so don't let the crunches bother you.

whew, this is a crazy situation...it's apparent you don't have an obturator nerve injury from the pregnancy or you wouldn't be able to adduct your thighs or really even feel anything on the inside of your thighs...but your abs??? hmm...

did you have a c-section? if so, nerves that were cut could have been "permanently" cut and no longer give you sensation in the area. if not, the pressure of the baby on your spine might have put enough pressure on the nerves that innervate your abs and pseudo-paralyzed them. if that's the case, you should get the feeling back....

you might get the sensation back, if you don't, i'd talk to your doctor because several of the nerves that innervate your abs ALSO innervate other important part of your abdominopelvic region...that wouldn't be a good thing!

if your are able to compress your abs, flex forward, and eliminate without a problem, you'll probably be ok because the motor part of the nerves are working (you probably already know, but your abs definitely help with defecation and such). I hope you get the muscular sensation back, but if you don't and everything is working, i don't think it's a bad thing!

keep up the workout! don't worry, the weight from your tummy will come off eventually!

much love, and good luck with things...:flowerforyou:

    and congrats on the baby!

I like it! I'm up to level 3 now and it's a booty kicker. Great way to mix things up.

It's also possible that what you are thinking is "flab" is actually muscle separation from having kids. I've got that and I have this big poof of skin right above my belly button and below my breasts and absolutely nothing can be done about it except to have a tummy tuck and have the muscles repaired.

I do Pilates and I've lost over 80 lb. and I still have the poof of skin and I always will, unless I'm willing to get PS, which I go back and forth on.

I had the same issue... never a sensation of "hey, I used that muscle group!" for my abs.

Until I tried different classes at the gym.

Yoga and sit up/crunches never did a thing for me. Then I tried a body sculpting class, and of all moves, one weight lifting exercise focused on the arms made my abs sore the next day!!!!

Also, have you tried running? If I run (short distances, I'm still training... so I'm talking 3 min at a time) and hold in my stomach like I'm supposed to, my abs are slightly sore the next day.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of soreness. I don't think it means anything is wrong. I think it means you have stronger muscles.

Thanks guys for the various input. Yes i did have a c section and that theory i never thought of. I guess i will take your advice and try different work outs. Yes Jillian's Shred was good. It is short but makes you sweat. I think i will continue with her routine

Yes Jillian's Shred is good, and I think Biggest Loser Cardio Max is a killer... and it has jump started me to start losing weight

Because you're going through the motions. You're not focused on working your abs, do slow reps, and contract them hard. Don't focus on "lifting yourself up" let the "contraction" of the muscle lift you up. Then tell me you don't feel any pain...
