OT... probably TMI, I have a UTI

I've had it for 2 days now, I've been drinking water like mad (right now I'm on my 10th glass). It's not horribly painful or anything, I've had waaaaaaaay worse. But I just went pee (for the millionth time today) and there was a bit of blood when I wiped. Now I know that a UTI can cause some blood in the urine and all that but it was kind of out of nowhere. I'm talking a very minute amount of blood here FYI, a pink stain really. Does that sound normal? I've had it before but usually accompanied by pretty intense pain. Ffor those of you that don't know, I live in a really isolated place and it's a 2 hour drive the emergency room. Did I mention our car is in the shop? Ya, so please don't suggest a trip to the hospital, it can't happen. Just wanna know if that's normal. Any other home remedies I can try? I'm going crazy with the water, thought it was helping but now I'm not sure...

You don't need to go to the ER. You probably do need to get on antibiotics, and maybe a pain relieving medicine prescribed specifically for UTIs. Please see/call a doctor. You don't want this spreading to your kidneys.0

Check with the local pharmacy.
In the States, I thought there was something over the counter for UTIs now....
(I know you aren't in the states, but still.)
Oh wait, can you get antibiotics without a script in Canada??
Go get meds honey, and cranberry juice helps too.0 -
I would call your pharmacy - it sounds like it could be a bladder infection as opposed to a UTI.0

you need to go to the dr. Also too much water can take part in getting a UTI just found that out myself. But schedule a dr appt so they will get you a script - i wouldn't go to the ER because its prob not life threatening (which is what an ER is for just call your primary care physician)0 -
Any cranberry juice in the house? Even orange juice, lemon juice in your water. Something until you get on a prescription. Don't let it go.. it will travel into your kidneys which is very painful. Make sure you don't have a start of a yeast infection. It actually can have the same symptoms... At least for me it does.. Take care! :flowerforyou:0

don't worry darlin', it is normal. I have had a RED stain on the TP before. You do want to get some antibiotics though. This is an infection and most likely won't go away on its own. I too live in a remote area and I know its a pain to take a whole day to go to the doc. However, you don't want the infection spreading to your kidneys and making things even worse. Good luck to you!0

I know how you feel...last year I had it for a while... took a couple of rounds of antibiotics to clear it up then I got a Yeast Infection :grumble: but now I take a cranberry pill a day and drink cranberry juice... I found my problem was probably not drinking enough which means the bacteria was sitting in there instead of flushing out...
I thought I had one a few weeks ago and I drank and drank and p'd a 100 times and finally went to the doc and she said I didn't have one but I did get some pills for bladder spasms...makes your p orange!!
Def go before and after... "you know" and that helps prevent them too.
Good luck!:flowerforyou:0 -
no pharmacy here, no car to get to one. :explode: so frustrating.0

Exactly... unless you wait too long and it becomes one!
Call a doctor now, and tell him/her about your symptoms. The dr. may be able to just call in the Rx to your pharmacy without you even needing to go in for a visit. But don't wait!0 -

Is there a nurse where your fiance works? Any clinic/place that dispenses medicine?
What an advanced society we've become, with internet everywhere but not medicine. :grumble:0 -
Home Remedy Treatments for Urinary Tract Infections
UTIs that last longer than two days require medical intervention. Untreated UTIs can infect the kidneys and turn into a much more serious problem. To help prevent a UTI from developing or nip one in the bud, try some of the home remedies available in your own kitchen.
Home Remedies from the Cupboard
Baking soda. Adding 1 teaspoon baking soda to your glass of water may help ease your infection. The soda neutralizes the acidity in your urine, speeding along your recovery.
Blueberries and cranberries have bacteria-inhibiting properties, and blueberry
juice has been found to prevent UTIs.
Home Remedies from the Refrigerator
Blueberries. Blueberries and cranberries are from the same plant family and seem to have the same bacteria-inhibiting properties. In one study, blueberry juice was found to prevent UTIs. Since you're not likely to find a gallon of blueberry juice at your local store, try sprinkling a handful of these flavorful, good-for-you berries over your morning cereal.
Cranberry juice. Many studies have found that drinking cranberry juice may help you avoid urinary tract infections. It appears that cranberry juice prevents infection-causing bacteria from bedding down in your bladder, and it also has a very mild antibiotic affect. Drinking as little as 4 ounces of cranberry juice a day can help keep your bladder infection-free. But if you tend to get UTIs or are dealing with one right now, try to drink at least 2 to 4 glasses of cranberry juice a day. If pure cranberry juice is just too bitter for your taste buds, you can substitute cranberry juice cocktail . It seems to have the same effect as the pure stuff. Take note: If you have a UTI, cranberry juice is not a replacement for doctor-prescribed antibiotics in treating your infection.
Pineapple. Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples. In one study, people with a UTI who were given bromelain along with their usual round of antibiotics got rid of their infection. Half the people who were given a placebo plus an antibiotic showed no signs of lingering infection. Eating a cup of pineapple tastes good and may just help rid you of your infection.
Home Remedies from the Sink
Water. If you tend to get urinary tract infections, be sure to drink plenty of water -- about 8 eight-ounce glasses a day. You should be urinating at least every four to five hours. If you are currently dealing with an infection, drink buckets of water to fight it off. Drink a full 8 ounces of water every hour. The river of water in your system will help flush out bacteria by making you urinate more frequently.
Home Remedies from the Stovetop
Hot water. Heat up some water on the stove, and pour it into a hot water bottle. Place the water bottle on your lower abdomen to help ease any pain caused by the infection.
Home Remedies from the Supplement Shelf
Vitamin C. Some doctors are prescribing at least 5,000 mg or more of vitamin C a day for patients who develop recurrent urinary tract infections. Vitamin C keeps the bladder healthy by acidifying the urine, essentially putting up a no-trespassing sign for potentially harmful bacteria.
Do's and Don'ts
DO use it. When you've got to go, go. It sounds simple, but how many times have you held it -- when you're in a business meeting, when you're stuck in traffic, when you're at a concert and the lines are too long. If you hold your urine, you're more likely to get a backup of bacteria and end up with an infection.
DO consider cotton. Anything that comes into close contact with any of those ultra-personal areas should be cotton. Women should wear cotton underwear or cotton-lined panty hose to help stay fresher and dryer. Guys should go for boxer shorts.
DON'T drink alcohol. Alcohol is an irritant to your bladder, just what you don't need when you're dealing with an infection.
DO cut the caffeine. Also avoid caffeine-loaded drinks such as caffeinated soda pop, coffee, and tea. Caffeine can irritate the bladder, which is the last thing you need when a UTI has taken hold.
DO pull out a nonprescription pain reliever. Taking acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin can help ease the pain during your infection.
DO follow the rules for making love. If you have trouble with UTIs, be sure you and your partner clean up before making love. After you make love, head to the bathroom to urinate and get rid of any potentially harmful bacteria. And try using a condom instead of a diaphragm. Diaphragms may promote UTIs.
DO go with the flow. After urinating, be sure to wipe from front to back to keep bacteria from getting close to the urethra.
These home remedies can help you prevent a UTI or eliminate one already in progress. However, be sure to check with your doctor, especially if a UTI lasts longer than two days.
Hope one of these help for you hon:ohwell:0 -
Decrease your water intake down to the 8 glasses per day and add in a glass of pure cranberry juice. If it gets worse you need to get it checked out.0

 I always go after "you know" but sometiems I don't think there's enough in there to flush it out.
I get UTIs pretty often, at least once a year. Only 2 have been bad enough to require antibiotics. And both, I saw blood. This one isn't very painful, I mean I have to pee a ton but that's because I've drank 12 (now) glasses of water today!
I found a website that recommends drinking an 8oz glass of water with 1/2 tsp of baking soda dissolved into it to help with early signs of a UTI. I'm trying it now and you would not believe how bad it tastes! :laugh:0 -
1. Educating yourself is extremely important. The whole 'mind over matter' concept is important for natural health because all research studies have shown that your mental health and attitude is important to your overall health. You should be convinced that natural remedies will work before you try them.
And the reason why natural remedies work is because they work with the body. For instance, one natural remedy (vitamin C) will boost the body's immunity to fight of the E coli bacteria. Antibiotics work because they literally kill all the bacteria (good and bad bacteria) which will make the urinary tract unbalanced and prone to further infections.
2. Boosting your immunity. As stated earlier, you should be supplementing vitamin C to your daily schedule. We recommend at least 1000 mg during an attack to boost the immune system. We also recommend getting at least 5-7 fruits or vegetables a day along with plenty of water. (Beware of certain fruits that are listed below)
3. Your diet also can help or hinder your infection. During an attack, you should avoid these foods with a high acidic content: coffee, tea, chocolate, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, tomatoes, wine, soft drinks, chicken, steak, corn, eggs and sour cream.
4. Herbal Therapy. Echinacea is often referred to as the king of herbs because it is often used to treat everything including UTIs. This herb can be found in most health stores and can be used to strengthen the immune system. Additionally, it will also help fight off bacterial infections.0 -

I hate those! Blood is actually normal (I had one a few years ago and thats what my Dr. said) and eat lots of cranberries and drink real cranberry juice (not 'drink')
Aww.. I feel so bad for you, those are horrible! :flowerforyou: Get well soon.0 -

I'm in a unique situation. I'm not aboriginal, but my fiance and I currently live on an isolated native reserve where he is a teacher. This is a temporary situation for us. There is a "nursing station" here, about a 5-10minute drive from our house. The problem with that is that they can only write prescriptions when a doctor is there. The doctor only comes every other tuesday. They have basic medications there, I don't know if the have antibiotics on hand or not. The other issue is depending on who's working there when you go in, they sometimes refuse to treat "outsiders"- meaning people that are not "band members". My fiance went in once with pink eye in both eyes and the guy at the desk was so rude to him, until a young white nurse took him aside. Anyway, it's a possibility if need be, but I don't know how much good it will do me.0 -

Baking soda reminded me of an email I got awhile back about different uses for different products..
Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-even though the product was never been advertised for this use.
If you have any...it's worth a try!0 -
I just tried to get an appointment for this evening at the nursing station and the girl on the phone said they close at 4. WTH, I can only get a ride there AFTER 4 because all the people I know here are teaching... school ends at 4.
I'm really frustrated now, a couple of friends of ours are going into town tomorrow so if it is no better by then I will see if I can get in at the walk-in clinic there. I only have an ontario health card though... hmmm I don't know if that will work.0 -
Oh, I feel for you..I swear UTI's are the worst,,,rather have the flu, at least you can drug yourself into feeling better with the flu. I got recurrent UTI' s for years, it got so bad my teachers in high school all had notes from parent and doctors saying if I got up and bolted from the room, there was a reason.. Cranberry juice and water until you can get your hands on antibiotics, so frustrating though, I have tried to get a rx over the phone before, and have yet to find a doc that will do it...I don't know if you can find it in Canada but I keep Uristat (OTC - relieves the pain until you can get antibiotics) on had all the time, because naturally I get a UTI on a saturday morning...Another brand name is Cystex - which I know you can get from Drugstore.com. And think about keeping the cranberry supplements on hand, whenever I feel a UTI coming on, I take those for a day or 2 and its usually all good. None of this helps you now, I know...Just get in as soon as you can.0

isn't yogurt good for UTI's too?0

You need to go to the doctor.
I had an UTI that went untreated because it was asymptomatic until it reached my kidneys. I had a bit of blood in the urine, and the next morning I was in the worst pain I've ever been in...I couldn't stand up straight, couldn't sit back on anything, couldn't move. It felt like my kidney was going to burst. I went to the school clinic and they got me in right away, and usually there's a 2+ hour wait. I got a shot of lidocaine in my side, they tested me for stones, and made me fill the Rx for the antibiotics right away. You don't want to mess with this.0 -

Songbyrd don't says things like that that scare me :frown:
I tried to get in to the doctors but I couldn't so I don't really know what else to do. They are closed today because it's an Aboriginal holiday and they are not open on the weekend either. I have no choice but to wait until Monday and see how I am then. I have had a MILLION of these, like I said, they usually go away on their own. The teeny bit of blood just scared me a bit. Actually my doctor told me once to give them a couple days if the pain was very minor, and drink lots of water, because they usually do flush out on their own. Obviously not always, and yes I know they can spread to your kidney's in extreme cases but that has not happened to me yet (thank god). Keep all fingers crossed that I am well (no pain during my morning pee today!) I feel normal right now (yesterday I swear I drank about 30 8-oz glasses of water!!) so maybe I'm ok. Only time will tell.0 -
I'm glad you're feeling better, Kerri. :flowerforyou: Hopefully, it's all gone now!0
