So I work in the computer field, part of our thing is running cables and managing school networks. If you know old rural schools you know there is flights and flights of stairs. I have a skinny guy there that always makes little comments here and there about weight. Anyways we were going up and down the stairs doing what we need to do and the guy is just gassed. He is probably 150 pounds and gassed. I wasn't winded at all. He looks at me and asks me about it. I just smiled and said I walk/jog around 4 miles a day do you really think some stairs is going get me winded... which I didn't want to admit it but I didn't even realize I wasn't winded and it hit me.. woah... Working out even though I'm not skinny has delivered some amazing benefits already. I also made me realize just because someone is skinnier than you or doesn't have a belly doesn't mean they are healthy and in shape.

This made me completely redefine what I want. I don't want to just be skinny. I want to be healthy. It was the first time that I am seeing/feeling a truly tangible effect from the gym. Just 2 months ago those stairs would of gassed me. Unfortunately this has just increased my goal. Its not about just the waistline anymore. Now it's a much larger goal. I've heard people say on here that diet alone you can lose weight and that is true, but I found out I want so much more!

After this experience I started noticing it takes more and more time for me to work up a sweat and I've been increasing my speed on the exercise bike. I used to have a hard time to do resistance 3-4 and go over 14 mph. Now I have to do resistance 6 or higher and I'm doing 18-19mph still. Treadmill I am creeping up much slower as I don't want to reinjure my knee. I've increased it to an average of 3.7-3.9 mph but increased the time spent. I just never really thought about it as I was increasing things at the gym. It didn't feel like a tangible difference.

So when people ask me from now on how to lose weight my new question is, do you just want to lose weight or do you want to be healthy?

that is awesome.... and i have just recently realized the same thing.... i mean i can now take a flight of stairs going up at a relatively fast pace. sure i am still winded by the time i get up to the top, but not as winded as i got just barely walking up them about a year ago. it is amazing how much better i feel than i did before and i am so able to do stuff i didnt even dream i could do a year ago.. :)

I love it!!!! I had the same experience with my sister, we took 2 zumba classes back to back and half way through the first one she was winded and I wasn't. Healthy is better, that's my new goal, can't worry about the skinny, if it happens great.

Most Def Krash! It's nice to not have to go up stairs and take a cooling down period before walking into a teachers classroom and speak with them. I used to have to take a minute or two and stop gasping for air before going into a class room so I didn't sound like I was going to croak while trying to ask them a question lol.

That's awesome -- I totally know what you're talking about. A few days ago the kids had an emergency off in the woods. I bolted out of the house and sprinted to where they were, and when I got there I didn't feel like I was going to keel over. In fact, I wasn't even panting. Maybe I should pick up the pace when I run!

Way to expand your goals, and keep up the great work!

Good for you! It's such a true thing, though. Being skinny does not mean healthy at all. :)

Good for you, but I have to say that I have been in the skinny guys shoes many times and have been asked to slow down, etc.... by someone much bigger than me.

You may be the first person that he didn't have to slow down for.

I'm over 300 pounds and going up those stairs didn't gas me. If he was in shape even in the little bit that wouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't of been so proud of it had he not been the guy who liked to make wise cracks about my weight all the time. Knowing the guy I doubt that I'm the first person he didn't have to slow down for.
