Hi my name is chip. Ive been in a wheelchair for 28 years. C7 quad with good upper body. Im 55 years old and I am probably 40lbs overweight. I'd love to hear from someone else who is in my shape and is in the battle with me or who has come out on the other side in victory. How do you exercise? What kind of eating plan is working for you? Etc. I'll take a good hunting or fishing story too.

Hey Chip--I use a chair and have/had about 40lbs to lose too. I am doing it all with calories in, calories out and slowly. I'm at 3 months right now, of doing MFP. Since it's hard to weigh ourselves in a wheelchair, (you know this) I'm going by my clothes and how I feel, to see if I'm doing OK. After 3 months I know I've lost something, might be 8 lbs, might be 10, might be more. But I'm just doing a very sedentary calorie setting, 1200 daily, which is not easy. In fact just today I upped it a little to 1290. (big dealio) but I think for us it's healthy cooking, lots of filling fresh/steamed veggies, low fat as possible, lean protein, water, being really mindful of how we're eating.
That's what I've done. I don't even count my exercise or manual chair pushing because it's too low to be dependable. So it's ALL counting calories.
Cooking is a major chore when you don't stand as you know. Grocery shopping in stores is also not too easy, but I've got some mobility so I do these things. But there are many real barriers to healthy nutrition with disability so it's double or triple hard to do this. But YOU CAN. I'm trying to avoid drive thru fast food as it's super easy and bad for health and weight. Read every nutrition label you can find and log as much as you can here and you will definitely see some changes in a month or so. Spend time here on the forums reading how others are doing too. Welcome and good luck and good health!

Hi to both of you! I’m a paraplegic, for 30 yrs. I’ve put on a gross amount of weight and have tried many times to lose it. I feel like I know what to do, but I always quit. This time I am hoping it will just click for me and become a lifestyle. I plan to eat low carb no refined carbs low sugar high proteins. And try to get in as much exercise as I can. Which Can be hard, because I have a rotator cuff injury. Best wishes to you both!0
