Today I ran the direct route (1.62 miles) but yesterday I took a longer route around the back of one of the lakes for 3.47 miles. Great workouts at the gym both days, too.
I’ve been going back and forth on feeling ready for the TMC weekend races next week (SO SOON!). I’d definitely have preferred my mileage to be higher, but there’s nothing I can do about that now. Tomorrow I’m planning on an 8-10 mile run. I really enjoy that distance and haven’t been able to run it more than a couple of times this year, so I’m hoping that goes well and I can really take advantage of the beautiful fall weather. 52F and sunny this morning, which I call just about perfect.
ALSO! Not running related question: my husband has to go in for a colonoscopy on Monday. I swear I remember a conversation here ages about about how to make the prep more tolerable. Whether I’m remembering right or not, anyone have any tips?

As a veteran of multiple colonoscopies, I can say the prep is what you make of it.
It's never fun, but always bearable.
His reward will come when Doc tells him, "Good job on the prep."
It's not much, but it beats the alternative.3 -

It all started because I have an appointment after work so I went to the gym for my anti-t-rex plan at lunchtime instead of my normal 3-4 mile walk. As I was finishing up I saw 2 of my workers (well I only found out later it was 2, I only recognized one of them at first) heading out to run. They were out the door and out of sight before I was done. Once I was done I got my sunglasses and decided to go out for a short walk since I still had some time left before my next meeting. Well I get out there and see the 2 people running up a bridge, and sprinted to catch up with them. They did not look like they were going that fast, I thought it be easy.
They were doing 9 min pace, up hill. Ops
I sprinted a quarter-mile hard to catch up. Turned out they were running to packet pickup for a race this weekend (It is on a Sunday so I have to miss it), so I ran with them there. Walked around the expo and then we ran back. A whole like 2.6 or 2.7 miles, I would have rounded off but was already late for a meeting. At least one of the people I was running with was in that same meeting.
Now if I only knew their names...
Anyways that 2.6ish miles will be it for me today. Too many appointments, BUT! This is week 3 of my anti-t-rex plan and I have made all 3 weeks! This is approaching record breaking I think.
OH I forgot to mention...
When I caught up to them the guy that was running with the lady (as far as I know they are just coworkers) said, "I was just telling her you have massive calves like a UPS truck driver."
I am not sure how to take that...
Right?! This is why jeans don't fit me... they go over my waist, but they are super tight and I have to pull them up over my calves and then it is a real chore to get them off my calves too.0 -
I went out this morning and ran a federal recreational area about 2 hrs. drive away. It was a terrible run because I ate too much last night... local cancer group had a cookout fundraiser, so I got a pork butt. I was hangry for some good bbq and I figured I could support cancer and quench that hunger simultaneously. But paid for it this morning... this is why I don't eat after lunch the day before races (and not much for lunch or breakfast either).
Also, my insulin pump battery died overnight. I knew it was low when I went to bed and figured I could get through the night. I was wrong. Also, I thought it gave me a very loud and annoying alarm when the battery died. There is a backup internal battery of some sort for this. I know because if I take the battery out (like a normal replacement), it immediately alarms and keeps going for an hour or some crazy amount of time like that before it finally shuts up. Anyway, my BG was super high when I awoke. Even though it was back under control within the first few miles after running, I had leg cramps from the high. And then my CGM fell out, so I had to test manually to keep an eye on BG's. Also, it was trail, so I carried a pack with water, medical stuff, phones, etc. and that additional weight didn't help either. So there was a lot of walking and I cut it a bit short of the 20 miles originally planned. It ended up being 17.01 miles at a 15:02 average pace.
The good things: early on in the run, there were some nice rolling hills and I got a good rhythm going. Also, it's a really nice area and I'm definitely going to have to find time to go back.
@AlphaHowls Great job on the half marathon!13 -

Just tell him to stay near a toilet and plan nothing that can not be interrupted regularly with little notice. It honestly is not that bad.

I just signed up for another marathon! The early bird entry fee ends tomorrow so I figured I'd bite the bullet and lock it in. It's the Hawke's Bay International Marathon on May 16, 2020 https://hawkesbaymarathon.co.nz/
I ran this back in 2018 as my very first full marathon. They've changed the course since then to what looks like a much better route. It ends at a local winery which I'm quite excited about It's sponsored by Air New Zealand and when I ran it last year they had travel related quiz questions up on boards all along the course with the answers about a mile after each question. I loved that as it really took my mind off the loooong way I had to run. I hope they do that again next year.

Yeah, he knows that bit - this is his third in five years, so its not a fear-of-the-unknown issue. He’s going to have to do this every year or two for the rest of his life, and really had a hard time with the prep the last couple of times.0 -

Well done @AlphaHowls! Hope the leg recovers quickly!
I got a new toy today!
Cost me $100 second hand. I got advice from a co-worker who does a lot of cycling, ows 3 different bikes, her hobby is cycling half the length of the country. She said don't bother buying new. So I scoped out Facebook, and saw this one. Feels like it fits perfectly, no niggles or anything. But I know it will take a while to acclimatise my butt to a seat again haha. Been about 7 years since I last rode a bicycle eep. I also got a helmet and lights for $50! So new hobby cost me $150 all up. That means $550 on the debt. Excellent job!19 -
I had another half marathon today. I was originally planning on doing the 15k distance as a final hit out before the Auckland Half in three weeks, but this is one of the five runs in the Half Marathon Series so I had to do the 21k if I want all the pieces of the fancy interconnecting series medal, which I do.
Anyway, to preserve my legs I kept my pace a little lower than I expect to run Auckland - aimed for between 5:15 and 5:30, and finished in 1:53:04. It was nice to be running, and running well and reasonably quickly, without the pressure or pain of race pace. It also meant I had plenty of gas in the tank to run the final kilometre in 4:46 and pass about 20 people!
It was a nice day out after a week of wet and wild winter weather, and the temperature was perfect for running. However, as today was the first day of daylight savings, I had to get up an hour earlier (5:40am old time) on an already early start and, on top of that, we went out for dinner last night and got to bed an hour later than usual so missed my preferred 9 hours sleep by a good 3. Consequently I am now completely shattered. My newest medal is the biggest I’ve got:

Race report/summary:
As is usually the case when I look forward to something, the stars were not aligned correctly for it.
My race was at 8pm in the nearby city, with number pickup at 6. The idea was for the 3 of us to set out at 5.30, pick up my packet, have a coffee, wander about for a while then for me to change and for us to go visit Taco Bell for dinner afterwards (yeah I know, but they just opened the first Taco Bell round here and the novelty hasn't worn off yet cause we've only been twice lol).
My daughter came home from school on Thursday with a stinking cold and had to stay in bed on Friday. My husband called that he had to work late. So I not only had to drive myself into the city (side note: I have an irrational phobia about driving at the best of times, let alone in Friday afternoon rush hour in a city!) and do it all alone, I also had to enjoy the guilt trip at leaving my sick daughter home alone to go running. Yeah, she's almost 14 and she had a snotty nose, welcome to the paranoic world of living with a hypochondriac Spanish family. I almost didn't go, especially when my phone decided to die after lunch, but ended up thinking kitten it.
Managed to get there in one piece, albeit a sweaty tear-stained nervous wreck, and find my way into the underground carpark. Although they had asked us to leave plenty of time to collect numbers as there were 1,200 people signed up, there wasn't even a queue so I was able to walk straight up to the nice young man in uniform (did I mention this is a race organised by the National Police force?) and ask him for my number. Then, with almost 2 hours on my hands, I found myself a coffee and sat by the harbour watching the world go by. Around 7.15pm there were a lot of serious looking people running up and down and stretching, so I thought I'd better find a bathroom then try to look the part. When I stood up my cranky knee started grumbling, just to really put the icing on the cake. Walked and jogged around behind the area the stuff was set up hoping to warm it up until the helicopter arrived. I think the helicopter (and the men in uniform) are my favourite thing about that race, along with the sunset views. Surprisingly for Spain, the start was on time which caught a lot of people out! I placed myself right at the back with the strollers and stuck to a slow steady jog with them for the first half mile or so. Knee was sore but nothing horrific, but I decided to be sensible and go into my run-walk intervals. As it happens, for a slow, back of the pack runner I do much better than way than just trying to keep going. I think I really pissed off a few people, I would pass them, then they would catch up to me when I was walking, then I would run again and pull ahead. Repeatedly. Though I left them all behind after a few minutes of that. I wasn't racing though, the best I could do given the mood and knee was to take it conservatively and enjoy the run. So I looked at the boats, I watched the sun set behind the mountains, I looked at the lovely views of the city as it switched its lights on. Then the police helicopter, which had followed the leaders, came back to find the rest of the pack and started picking each of us out with its spotlight. Hilarious, people were throwing their arms in the air and pretending to surrender. Before I knew it there was just a kilometre to go (Garmin told me later it made it 4.79km rather than the 5.019 it should have been) and I my competitive streak did kick in a little then, enough to pick up the pace and run the home stretch, passing a few people on the way. I didn't even look at the clock by the finish arch! Grabbed a drink, went to get the car, got hopelessly lost trying to get out of the city. Ended up on the wrong side, had to drive all the way round the back on the motorway in the dark, then when I finally got home it took 20 minutes to find somewhere to park. And I forgot to stretch. Ah well, I do still love that race.
Off to see if my legs still work now, they didn't feel too bad yesterday but knees are definitely not my best friends.

Congratulations @ContraryMaryMary @AlphaHowls @eleanorhawkins and anyone else I missed, on your races!1

@ContraryMaryMary Well done!
And we really just need pick a time and stop messing with the clocks. hashtag grrr (we did no switch till after Halloween here in the USA, might interfere with candy sales otherwise)
@eleanorhawkins - Great job pushing through despite the conditions!0 -
Anyone need a training journal? It reminded me of @MobyCarp with its Boston blue.
Believe
Also, RTY/RTE has a promo started for next year. Many of you know that we formed teams and beasted on the miles this year... might have been a little too easy with 5 person teams... if you are interested in a team I’m sure there will be some. If I’m upright, I’ll participate. And I can rook dh in to it too. Or you can do the challenges on your own, if you have the mileage like @AlphaHowls @garygse @PastorVincent, @Scott6255 @polskagirl01 @kristinegift (hi), and the rest of you bad mamajammas 😄
Both the Believe folks and RTE ship outside of the US. I found shipping reasonable. (Ish)
Now go run for me.
ETA I signed up. I encourage you to have a look at it if you don’t do races and only want to participate in virtual runs, or maybe your coming back form a 4th hip surgery.... This promo package is all the races you need all year. I bought the whole shebang and and it was 62.99 with us shipping. I think the cheapest route, no swag is 25 (regular price). And the promo price expires oct 1st midnight... then I think it goes up 80 bucks.
Doc better be right that I’ll be cleared to start running January or February...7 -
@ContraryMaryMary @eleanorhawkins great job on your races!0

Good morning! Yesterday I ran a mile indoors on the treadmill at an incline and a higher speed. My time wasn’t great, but the point is, I pushed myself. I wanted to puke. I saw other people running at faster speeds last week and wondered why I never do that.... so I started to last week but yesterday I had to really push.
I also read that I should NEVER lift in running shoes. So I switched that. And ordered some Salomons for running as my Mizunos are worn out and my feet have been killing me for days after the gym.
My left arch, to be specific. The pain causes a limp and causes me to wince with every step. I haven’t run outdoors since I signed up for the goal because I am afraid to go run in old shoes, outside, already in pain. Do any of you have experience with this or know what is wrong? I haven’t met my insurance deductible yet so I’d love to NOT go to the doctor yet!
Good news is my new shoes will be here October 1, so just in time to set a goal for October5 -

Did my last long-ish run before my first HM next Sunday. Not entirely sure how I'm feeling about it seeing as I didn't get to run as far/as much as I'd hoped in preparation, but it's too late now! Will manage a few short, slow runs in the week before I rest up!4 -

The forecast was right: it snowed yesterday. We're in the valley though so it didn't stick. This morning it was 36F when I started out and though I knew I probably would need to peel off the layers, I still started with long sleeves, tights, jacket, hat and gloves. Within a mile, the gloves and jacket were off... the hat followed them not long after. I ran half the distance with Jackson, went home and dropped him and all my extra clothes, picked up Kira and ran another loop. I even mixed in a few strides.
The forecast calls for below freezing temperatures for the next few days, then it warms up a little (but still below 40). I'm looking forward to the cool weather for running!9 -
6 miles Thursday that I can't remember if I reported yet, or not, and 6 miles today. Extra rest day on Friday, like a dope, so 3 days in a row with tomorrow to make something close to goal... I'll be okay with anything between 6.5 miles and 16.5 - seems reasonable.

29/09 2.14 miles - Well at least I've done 20 miles for the month.
I'm really behind on reading the posts. Its been a hectic few weeks, been to 2 music festivals one which included Sinead O'Connor performing. I've bought a spin bike because our winters can get very stormy and make it awful to get out for a run. So I'm going to try and mix both for the winter.

Hi everyone! Well I had a pretty not cool weekend. I haven't had a chance to read any posts. I ended up needing to call emergency services Saturday morning due to severe abdominal pain that didn't go away after a few hours. I hate hospitals, I'm one of those people that have to be half dead before seeing a doctor, and I hated being transported in an ambulance, but I didn't know what else to do. I felt like my stomach was being chewed on from the inside out. Expected an alien to come chewing out at any moment. I had no other symptoms, just pain. Anyway, after several tests and scans they didn't find anything wrong with me, but the first two rounds of pain meds didn't help much. Around the 10th hour the pain suddenly got worse and they gave me another dose of some "strong" pain medicine that I have never heard of. That one seems to have done the trick but they decided to keep me overnight. So I got no running done this weekend. I was so weak yesterday from dealing with the stress and pain, and today after leaving the hospital, I've been trying to drink lots of liquids and walking around to get the meds out of my system. So....I am not going to meet my running goal for the month. Just going to focus on doing what I need to so I can run my half on Thursday.17
