SUGAR!!!

Hello,
I am always over my sugar.. it is set to 24grams which to me seems ridiculous. I have seen on other threads that everyone seems to think the same, it is too low, but if you eat fruit that it is okay... Well today I had 70grams of sugar! I had three pieces of fruit. I was 46 grams over my sugar intake, which I think is pretty bad right? what do u guys do? cut down on fruit? I dont think that anything else I ate was too high in sugar.
Also, I am not that much into red meat, try and have it twice a week. but my iron intake is usually pretty low. Should I take an iron supplement?
Thanks!

Same problem here--I am ALWAYS over on sugar. :-(0

if you really are worried about sugar stay away from fruits and processed foods.0

You should deffinately take an iron supplement. Are you eating other meats? If not you may want to add protein shakes to your diet as well.0

Right now, I don't concern myself with my sugar because pretty much the only sugar I eat is in the form of fruit. I try to avoid processed sugar or processed food for that matter.
3 pieces of fruit daily is healthy. Lots of nutrients and fiber. The sugar doesn't have the same impact as say a candy bar because of the fiber. I'm new to this site, but I think that as long as you're doing everything else pretty well and continue to lose weight, I wouldn't worry about it right now. I wish you much success!0 -
I've never tracked my sugar before, but I looked at it today (I usually watch overall carbs and I'm just fine). It has my goal set at 45. I went over by 25 today. That's the piece of cake I had ... yep, one little extra was "too much sugar." And I didn't eat a lot of other sugary stuff either, just an apple and frosted mini wheats, and I'm well under my calorie and carb goals for the day. What I'm saying is I agree, the sugar setting may be too low.
I couldn't check out your diary (it's not open) but as long as your sugars are coming from natural sources like fruit, rather than junk like my cake, I wouldn't worry too much, especially if overall carbs and calories are fine. I wouldn't go over 3 servings of fruit, maybe add some extra vegetables in place of any more that you want.
As far as iron, if you take a daily mutlivitamin that should cover it - most have 100% RDV of iron (18mg). If you don't, that'd be a better place to start than just an iron supplement, which can have other side effects. Women are more prone to anemia that men, but I don't think there's a different "women's recommended," so take that into account.
If you want to see how your blood iron is doing, you can donate blood. They always have to check your red blood cell %. As long as you're 38 or above hematocrit, you're doing great (that's the minimum to donate). If it's lower, you may still be okay, but may want to consider the vitamin or supplement.0 -
Thank you for the help. I rarely eat processed foods, and i feel like the bulk of my sugar is from fruit... but then other things that have 3 or 4 grams just build up and before I know it its at 70grams! I'm glad that I should be too worried about it. I will switch to berries and mayeb only have one serve of fruit!
thanks0 -
I do take a daily multivitamin, I just dont log it as MFP doesnt have the brand I use. Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it0

Two servings of fruit a day is optimal. Sugar, in any form, counts as sugar. Eating sugar can make you crave sugar, so it's best to keep it in check. If you can stay under 14grams of sugar per serving, you can help alleviate the cravings. Sugar from fruits is better than processed sugar, but it still should be limited in your diet, but 24 grams is awfully low.

At first I thought sugar is sugar, coming from a long line of diabetics.
Google "glycemic index"...
It'll give you a clue how your body handles different types of sugar.
When sugar is packaged with fiber (like in fruit) it hit's your bloodstream differently.
I like to keep a handle on sugars and artificial sweetener not only because of the diabetes hovering over my head waiting to pounce, but because sugars and artificial sweetener INCREASE my appetite so darn much. Makes it impossible to stay in my calorie range.

I never have found that I crave something sweet after eating fruit. I feel satisfied. Usually it keeps me from wanting the processed sugars as well. Candy or other processed sugars or fake sugars or processed fructose does make me crave more sugar. Yes two peices of fruit is optimal. Less and you are probably missing nutrients you need. Some fruits have as much nutrition as vegetables. Don't avoid them because of a setting on MFP.0
