what a beautiful place to run @noblsheep0

Wish you were here 5k race Saturday night. I was feeling a little nauseous but I figured I would give it a try. Ran with my running/ food adventure friend. It was a smaller race but it was nice. Everyone was there for a reason. Ran for my husband, for friends who I've lost to addiction, cancer and mental health. It was a brisk night. The course was mostly flat and next to Lake Michigan. For most of the race, I still wanted to vomit. I came in just over 31 min. PR. I also came in 3rd in my age group, my first AG place ever. A wonderful race overall

Race Report
Run Jurassic Marathon 28th September 2019.
This is a new event from White Star Running, with whom I did my first Half (extremely hilly) and my first Marathon (a very very hilly and challenging race). I don’t do roads. The race was mostly on the Jurassic Coast Path, on the South Coast of England, a rugged path prone to cliff collapses and teeming with dinosaur fossils. The weather forecast was 20mph headwinds, gusting 40mph, but we were hopeful the rain would hold off. This was an end to end race, with shuttle buses to the start, and last minute changes and agreements with landowners meant we had to walk about a mile downhill to get to the start.
Most people were in the toilets still when ‘ready, steady, go’ was yelled, so there was a confused scramble before we walked up the hill we’d just walked down. There was a long stretch of tarmac before we all queued to get over a stile and get onto the rough path we were all longing for. A good opportunity to enjoy the scenery!
The first few miles were hilly, as expected, and then we dropped down into the town of Weymouth, ran along the beach, then weaved past the shoppers, a few road crossings and along a railway path. I considered buying some souvenirs but the shops weren’t yet open….Finally we managed to leave the nasty tarmac behind for the coastal path, but even this had its challenges, as every so often a gust of wind would try and blow you off your feet – thankfully TOWARDS the shore.
I got chatting to a couple of ladies from the 100 marathon club. Except it turned out 100 was 50 or so marathons ago…. I felt very very small beside them. I spent ten minutes or so chatting to a guy who’d done a recce on the route, and he told me the story about why a certain stretch was known as heart attack hill, because he’d apparently had four heart attacks during the recce. I did try and remember my CPR training just in case…
By mile 16 my little toe was feeling sore. I’d pre-empted issues and wrapped them in KT tape, but it felt like there was a blister forming. Mile 18 I got to an aid station, and took the opportunity to sit in an ambulance and have them dress it.
Apart from the first stretch, we’d not had a lot in the way of proper hills, but the scenery was great, the fields and paths comfortable albeit a little muddy with a load of rain we’d had. We’d started at the same time as an Ultra behind us, and every so often I’d get passed by one of them, giving each other a cheery ‘well done’.
Mile 22 took a long time to come around, this is the site of the Lovestation, known for its music, cheeky cider and hugs. Because of the high winds, the set-up was subdued and out the back of cars, so the atmosphere was lacking, and then I turned round to find myself facing The Sweeper. Oh s*** I said, knowing I had to get a shuffle on so not to get pulled.
The next two miles were hell. There aren’t the right words or kittens available in the language to express how I and others felt about the two miles of shingle. NOT. EVEN. FUNNY.
With throbbing feet, ankles and blisters on both little toe and big toe on my left foot I hobbled to the finish, I usually love downhills, but not this time. Somehow I made it not quite grimacing (I skipped across the line) to the finish for a hug and a medal.
Things I have learnt –
Properly test shoes before a long race, I forgot I hadn’t done a long run in these.
Carry blister plasters and a weapon to pop them with
Don’t leave the cheese sandwich in the tent
Mentally a marathon is no bother, physically I’m just not very good at them.
Next year I’m going to plan lots of 10k races and no marathons. I need to get better at the running bit before I try them again.
Postscript. The race was part of a larger running festival, with an extremely hilly half and 10k planned for the Sunday. The weather looked bad so rather than stay I packed up my tent while I could in the dry and headed home. Sunday morning I looked at the reports coming in – tents had been blown away by the wind, the Race pick-up point marquee had collapsed, and all races were cancelled for that day.
and the after shot.....16 -

Finishing out the month with my fourth week of Monday morning running. I have had a mace-training class at night on Mondays so I needed to get those am runs done. Tonight is the last one. I might try to keep it going though.
I exceeded my September goal by 10 miles, and this puts me at my 2nd highest mileage month ever, after last September when I did 180 miles in the last full month of marathon training. I'm feeling good about that. And tired.7 -
@Teresa502 I am in eastern Washington. One of my coworkers signed up for a 10k trail race on Mount Spokane this weekend. He's not sure he's up for running that far in the snow, not to mention the freezing temperatures!
Congrats on your 5k PRs @143tobe and @mbaker566!

I went out this morning in about 38F with tights, long sleeves and a hat. I learned from yesterday that gloves and a jacket would be a bit much. Today was better, though I will probably have to dig out my buff and use that instead of the hat. Anyway, finished up the month with just over 50 miles. Given my monthly goal was to follow the plan with consistency, I'll say I met it. On to October!5 -
@mbaker566 congrats on your 5k PR! And AG place!!!! That's awesome!
@girlinahat big hugs and congrats on finishing your marathon! Pictures are beautiful, but that coarse sounds very difficult. You are a beast for getting through that!!1 -
@mbaker566 Congrats on PR and placing! Great cause too!
@girlinahat Awesome report! You are a star for completing!
@143tobe Good luck, and yea you are so ready.
Congrats to all the other racers and runners this past weekend! This thread certainly does move fast..
So, I signed up for a 10K next Sunday...I was undecided on it, and had only partly registered a couple weeks ago, and so of course I get a reminder email to complete the sign up and they gave me 20% off code - so that sealed it lol.
I went yesterday and ran the course so I would kind of have a feel for it -- it's not a bad course, flat parts, a few inclines, and one hill. A bit of everything. I'm hoping for better temps next week though. Yesterday was mid 70, but with 90% humidity - making for a hot run and I ran out of water, but thankfully my husband was bike riding near by and he met me at mile 5 to give me some more.
I did make goal for September! A little over actually, so that was good.
See ya in October!11 -
Great job on the PR and AG win @mbaker566!
Great race report @girlinahat! What a challenging but beautiful run!
@143tobe Great job on your 5K PR and you will definitely be ready for the Half!3 -
Miss a few days of this thread and WOW! Lots of stuff going on.
It turns out my stomach issues during my HM a week ago weren't just about eating too much or eating something different. I had GI and fatigue issues for several days after that. I don't know what it was, but thankfully it was fairly mild and I seem to be back to normal now. I did skip a few runs because of it though so won't make my monthly goal. I at 115/140 miles with a 10 mile run yet to go tonight.
The day after my HR I only went for a short run for Kody's sake. 3.9 miles.
Wednesday I forced myself for a run, again for Kody, and managed 5.2 miles.
Saturday I set my alarm for 5:00 AM with the intention of joining a group for an 18 mile trail run at 6:30 AM at the park nearby, but my alarm didn't go off and I didn't get up until 8 AM. It was a gorgeous day for a run...mid 50's F and sunny. I ran 11 trail miles on my own then went home to get Kody and did 5.5 paved miles with him
My wife and I spent Saturday night at the marina on our boat. We knew we weren't going sailing yesterday with such a horrible forecast (cold, rain, and much more wind than I'm comfortable sailing in) but it's our retreat so we went anyway. The only sailboats I saw on the lake were part of a weekly racing series. I saw one boat in apparent distress with the sails flogging like crazy and the jib getting wrapped around the forestay such that they couldn't get it down. They ended up being pushed onto the rocks and required a fire department rescue. Thankfully no one was hurt but there was several thousand dollars in damage.
We also wanted to see if we had any damage after a tornado went through the marina last Tuesday. Our dock neighbors said we were fine, but still wanted to personally inspect it. It was fine. Some weren't so lucky. It was only an F0 tornado, with winds to 80 MPH, but it went right through the marina and some vacation trailers. Some trailers looked like a bomb went off in them. Some boats were totaled and one dock will need to be replaced. They have tall steel pylons filled with concrete and embedded in concrete and they were bent or pushed over...yet the wood dock and flimsy electrical pedestals themselves are fine. crazy.
The first photo is from the local news, the last three my wife took:This boat didn't get blown up into the parking lot, it had already been pulled for the season and was up on a cradle.
Back to running...I intended to run early Sunday morning but again, my alarm didn't get me up and I didn't wake up until TEN THIRTY!!! Wow! I must have really needed the sleep. I skipped my run so we could go out to eat and planned on running when we got hom. By the time we got home it was too late.

I will be back later to finish reading this thread! But OMG @7lenny7! I am so glad you had no damage to your boat but sad for all the others! Wow!!
Figured I would update for the end of the month even though I haven't run much this last week and I met my goal quite a while ago. I am 38 miles past my goal and if I had run more this week I might have made 100miles but I am good with it.

@7lenny7 – wind and flood waters are such scary forces of nature. I’m glad you’re boat wasn’t damaged. Obviously your body was still recovering from the stomach bug and you needed the extra sleep this weekend.
@zeesparrow – I had a week long conference one time in Portland, OR and I stayed an extra day to play tourist. I took a charter bus trip to Multnomah Falls and we crossed over into Washington. That’s my brief exposure to the state. Wish that I had more time to explore the area.
@girlinahat – Congratulations on your marathon! Love the pictures (except for your poor toe). You talk about running 2 miles of “shingle.” Is shingle the picture of all those small pebbles? Or are they shells?
Congratulations @mbaker566! Way to go!

@shanaber I'm so sorry to hear about Hobbes' latest report. My prayers for him, you and your family.
@143tobe I had never heard of fatty coffee before. I normally have an iron stomach but I'm not sure I'd be able to drink that! Still, it's intriguing. No, unfortunately I was well off my PR for this race by about 22 minutes. And your weight loss...wow!!! Nice work! I do hope you get that pain figured out!
@zeesparrow sorry to hear about your loss!
@juliet3455 those Achilles issues suck. I deal with one on and off, though mine is not insertional, which I understand to be a bit worse. I've been doing eccentric heel drops on our deck steps every time I let Kody out. I do 45 on each foot per session. Once I get past these races in October I think I'm going to start doing them with a weighted backpack on. I've been told my PT that they are the gold standard for Achilles rehab.
@Avidkeo way to go on getting up to 7k! I like your solution to your money question.
@HonuNui I had to look up what a "kanikapila" was..that sounds very fun!
@kirstymn @Tramboman @AJSkinay & @Faebert great job hitting you goals!
@martaindale beautiful photos of Prague, now I want to go there!
@alphahowls @ContraryMaryMary @eleanorhawkins @mbaker566 well done on your races!
@LoveyChar welcome! I don't know if you found it yet but we'll be moving over to the October thread soon: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10766490/october-2019-monthly-running-challenge/p1
@MegaMooseEsq I know the route your talking about. Not only can that path along Minnehaha get confusing, it's so narrow!
@girlinahat ah yes, the "grim sweeper". Congrats on not getting swept! I've been swept off a course before it and sucks. What you call "shingle"...is that the small pebbles I see in the photo? I think we'd call that pea gravel and yeah, 2 miles of that would be awful! Great photos. I'd love to run trails in England some time.

I'm going to do a 5k tonight so I can finish September with 35 miles running.8
-
@mbaker566 - congratulations on the PR and AG place! That is awesome running considering how emotional the race was and that you weren't feeling well going into it!
@girlinahat - nice marathon running in a beautiful place and great job escaping that evil sweeper!! Your pinkie toe looks so sore - OUCH!
@katharmonic - we have seen a couple of new places that have axe throwing and with your mace training you could be the big winner! 😁 Honestly I bet it is a great whole body workout!
@zeesparrow - we have several friends (of our daughter) in the Spokane area. I will have to see how they are doing with all the cold and snow! Of course I was just in Boise and it was in the 90s and now while they don't have snow yet, it has gotten really cold!
@RunsOnEspresso - great job getting n 35 miles after breaking your leg!
See everyone in October!
4 -
6.5 miles today puts me at 110 miles for September. 110 + 10% = 121 miles for October. An increase is an increase.
5 -
I haven't read any September posts yet. Any chance I get caught up before the end of the month?
I have been on vacation since August 31st. My husband and I drove to Yellowstone National Park from Indiana. So lots of sitting in the car. My husband hurt his knee several weeks prior to our vacation. He was able to drive but struggled with walking long distances.
September 18.....5.22 miles. Hot and humid. Started late and ran the last 2 miles in the darkness.
September 19....5.25 miles. Another hot and humid day. Legs felt tight, especially the hamstrings. I started feeling better after the first 2.5 miles. Not even close to being where I was prior to vacation.
September 22..5.32 miles
September 25...4.11 miles
September 28....4.35 miles at White River Greenway. Ran out of time to drive to the Monon. This paved area is really for bicycles, and it is a mile paved path near the White River. Cool breezes.
September 29...5.13 miles. Hot and humid weather. Still humid after the sun set.
Finally reached my goal. It's supposed to be very hot and humid this week. Thunderstorms on Thursday. Maybe there will be a break in the weather.
Congratulations to all who have met their goals. See you next month.
Total....29.38 miles
Goal....25 miles

Met my goal for September dispite plantar fasciitis and shin pain! Will be running on the track again babying my grumpy legs for awhile. Thanks for letting us know about Zombie Run - very fun!!! :-)

Made my September goal, just, as illness thwarted my running in the first week of the month. Planned a short shakeout following my half on Sunday - about 5km - and spent the whole time thinking, if I do just under 9 I'll hit my monthly mileage, so I did, as you do!

I am woefully behind on the thread again - 10 pages! Doubt if I'll be able to catch up. I'll try to do better in October! Can't believe it's October already! Anyway, I did want to report that I MADE MY GOAL for September. It's only the second time since I joined the group a little over a year ago. So, I'm pretty stoked. I ran and walked for a total of 50.7 miles - goal was 50! See you in the Oct thread!10
-
@katharmonic - we have seen a couple of new places that have axe throwing and with your mace training you could be the big winner! 😁 Honestly I bet it is a great whole body workout!
@shanaber it really is. Last week I was so sore all over, and I'm sure I will be this week as well. Lots of legs with squats and lunges along with the shoulders and arms.
Oh, and I was invited to be on an axe throwing league but I can't do it right now because it meets the same night as my half marathon training. But I might do it over the winter
@ereck44 hope you started reading with a big pot of coffee. You can get through the entire thread by tomorrow
And @quilteryoyo great job on making your goal!
Catch you all in October!2 -
Way behind inthread myself, but I see that @girlinahat fought through some "kitten" and took home the medal! Great job!
Ran 13.1 today to finish off the month at 185 miles according to Strava. Fell off the tracking bandwagon hard so I will just have to assume it is right.5 -

9.29: 5.5M Easy (117.5)
9.30: 5.5M Medium (123)
Finished the month with 123 miles which was 3 miles short of my running plan. Not at all disappointed. It was a hot month and most of my runs except the few I did on the treadmill were completed with a heat index of 90 or higher. Two were actually done at 100 degrees. So given the extreme temps, I'm pleased with my efforts. I also dropped 6.2lbs in September because I finally got my head wrapped around the fact I need to log my food because my hunger level is not a good indicator of how much I need to eat.
Took my kitty to the vet today, she received a shot of anti-inflammatory for her leg injury and seems to be doing 50% better already. The DR doesn't think it's a serious injury but I will have to bring her back on Friday if she doesn't improve by then. Congratulations to everyone on a great month!! See you on the next thread!!

@mbaker566 Congratulations on the PR and AG finish!
@girlinahat wow what a lovely place to run! Well done! I shuddered at the thought of running on shingle, running on gravel wears me out and shingle sounds ten times worse. Also, have you looked into silicon toe caps? That’s the only thing that keeps my husband from getting the same blister in the same place.
I made my 60 mile stretch goal after all. Needed 7 miles today to hit it, so that’s what we did. The heat is still heinous, I don’t know if the heat index hit 100 while we were running but the temperature was 96. This is ridiculous weather for the last day of September. When we finished and cooled off I had visible salt crystals all over my collarbones and face. Fortunately it’s supposed to be cooler next week.
There is a pair of sharp-shinned hawks that live in one particular tree along the Greenline, at about the two mile mark. We have seen them several times, and today the male soared down and flew in front of us about ten feet away as if he was pacing us. We got a really nice look at him! He was sitting in a tree next to the trail on our way back and didn’t even blink as we passed. We also saw half a dozen deer grazing, and a bunch of swifts swooping after mosquitoes.
That’s it for September, here’s to more pleasant weather in October!4 -
One final 9 mile run for the month tonight but I still fell a bit short of my goal. I had to wait out a thunderstorm before going out tonight. I wanted to run *in* the thunderstorm but with the store of an ultrarunner killed by lightning over the weekend at a trail race in Kansas fresh in my mind, I waited. When I did get out, the lightning was off in the distance but still provided quite a show

One benefit of waiting is that the temps dropped 15 degrees from upper 80's to lower 70's, but it was still too warm for me.

final thoughts -
yes @teresa502 and @7lenny7 - shingle is like pea gravel. I guess it relates specifically to small pebbles on a beach (we also use the term shingle to mean timber roofing sections, go figure). Shingle on a beach can vary in size from large rounded pebbles (which are even more ankle breaking) to this. This is the back end of Chesil beach, which is a geological phenomenon - naturally graded pebbles. I like to call it a special kind of hell....
@rheddmobile I've not heard of silicone toe-caps but going to look into them. I have a problem where my pinkie and third toe tend to twist from side to side so I get a long blister forming. It's worth some research into!!! I just hope the current issues heal before the weekend as I have a walking holiday coming up!!!2 -
@girlinahat - I got the silicone toe guards at @rheddmobile's recommendation and I love them. I found mine on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MFN98LC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=11
