Going out to eat or indulging, how do you do it?

I've only been on this site for a week and have already lost just about 3.5 lbs. Not too shabby! My issue or worry is about going out to dinner or to parties/bbq's. Do you just eat very little and super healthy the rest of the day and indulge when you are there. Or do you eat your normal "diet" schedule and try to make the right choices at these events? I'm asking this because one, we have a BBQ to go to tomorrow and , two, im heading to visit my mother and father in seattle and my mother loves to cook and i know there is going to be some pretty high in calorie foods there. Just need some advice from people that have been doing it a while. I have anxiety issues, so i think the though of these up coming event are just adding to it.

I have different methods that I use depending on the day/event... Extra exercise= extra guilt free calories (um... sometimes LOTS of extra exercise)
Try to make the best choices I can from what is offered.
and portion control. I'll put a bite or two (yes, a bite, not a scoop) of things I want, because those calories add up, but if I have a little of everything I don't feel deprived, and two bites is usually enough to satisfy the craving. I've actually read a study somewhere, that proved your pleasure centers in your brain stop lighting up after the first bite or two, so you truly won't miss it if you don't get more, you just think you will when you are scooping.. and if you really HAVE to have more, that's where the extra work out comes in lol... but start w/ a bite or two
Also, I eat w/ my children on my lap, or near by, because they will eat half of my plate for me. They are especially good about making sure I don't consume too many calories at dessert. Aren't they sweet?0 -
Eating with family or eating out, I try to make sensible choices. If there's a salad, for instance, I'll make sure I eat plenty of that, and have a little of the fattier, more high cal foods. Eat your veges first before turning to the other things on offer. I think this helps offset some of the problems.
However, I don't deprive myself of the nice foods, just have smaller portions alongside healthier choices. One day with my family isn't going to mess up my entire diet, after all.0 -
Super big exercise sessions to compensate. We tried a new restaurant on the weekend that was amazing, we ate smaller meals, but exactly what we wanted, and offset the HUGE calorific intake with a big exercise session later that night. Was it worth it? OMG YES!!! New restaurant is now my favourite!!!0
