i also cycled 30 miles this last weekend. could it be a cramp (not sure that is the right word?) from the pedals?
any ideas what to do to help it go away? thanks!

Is it worse in the morning, and then as the day progresses it gets less and less painful?0

I have the same thing, see if this sounds right (it's from webmd.com)
Ball of Foot Pain
Metatarsalgia produces pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. Strenuous activity or ill-fitting shoes are the usual causes. Treatment for metatarsalgia includes:
pain relievers
change to more comfortable footwear
inserts for the shoes to relieve pressure on the ball of the foot
(Ball of foot and arch are the same part of the foot)0 -
It could be plantar fascitis. But you'd need a physio or doctor to tell you for sure.
If the pain is getting worse, or not going away, you may need to rest, ice compress and elevate. And see someone who knows what they are talking about.0 -

no. it's actually more painful at night and better in the morning.0 -
What training plan are you following for you half marathon? Most plans recommend running only every other day with you long run one day a week...I noticed you are running every day. Your body needs time to repair from the trauma of running, especially if you plan to train for a big event. Be careful with overtaining, especially if you're not a runner by history. I, unfortunately, learned this the hard way and ended up with a stress fracture...not nearly worth it, trust me.
Sounds like plantar fascitis. There are stretches and, if it's really bad, splits or socks that you can sleep in. You can also try freezing a water bottle and then rolling it under your foot...helps a lot.0 -

it does sound similar. i just bought new shoes last month so i wonder if that is the cause? they are much 'looser' in the arch and toe area than my last pair.0 -

^This. I second the freezing the water bottle idea - that has helped me immensely in the past!0 -

my husband has that, but it doesn't seem to be the same thing as his. maybe it manifesting differently?0 -
I recently had issues in my left arch
I used this and it helped so much

I just plain old had arch soreness/pain and it wasn't plantar fascitis.0 -
I get (well, used to get) pain in my arches when I ran. I went to a podiatrist, and he diagnosed it is tendonitis. There is a tendon that runs from the outside of your heel through your arch and then attaches on the other side at the top of your foot (Peroneus longus). I was straining this tendon because of my foot shape, and the shoes/inserts were aggravating the issue. He did a temporary fix on my current insoles, and the pain was gone - like in next run gone! I get my custom orthotics tomorrow, so hopefully I'll keep on pain free.0

Stretching, lots of stretching. Also, you may need to add a day of rest in after your long runs, that should help your muscles recover. Other tips I received from my bone and joint dr. include;
Don't increase your weekly mileage more than 10% per week.
Warm down and warm ups are essential
Lots of core exercises on cross training days (cross training should not be on your rest day, rest is the only thing on a rest day:bigsmile: )
Don't increase speed too much if you are also increasing mileage.
Whey protein drinks or Chocolate milk within 15 to 30 minutes of your run will also help you recover quickly.
The right shoes are your most important investment.
That's all I've learned so far.
Hope it helps!

Usually it'll manifest the same way. It also tends to be more painful in the mornings and then gets easier throughout the day.
Runner's world has some helpful things to try and diagnose, but its nothing near as good as visiting a doctor. If its hurting bad, take a few days off. If you start back up and it still is hurting, go see a doctor.
