I burned 4000 cals today. That is my documented record, though I’m sure I’ve burned more. What is the most you have tracked burned in a day?

Are you talking about from exercise? What did you do to burn 4000 calories? Short of running a marathon, that sounds inflated to me.1 -
Total calories in a day0

So an additional 1600 cals over my 2400 normal1

My Garmin says I burned 10,215 kCal on a hike this summer. I started up the trail at 3 am and finished at 5 am the following day, so this doesn't exactly for your 24 hour rule, but it's pretty close.
God damn Enchantments.4 -
I've done 24-hour+ cycling events. Assuming a burn of 400 calories per hour, that's about 9600 calories.1
-
From exercise around 4000, but I ran a marathon that day.
Other than when I'm running crazy differences my record was 2400 exercise calories in a day plus my 1600 that I burn just being alive. That was a crazy day though, with a 3mile mile run, hour of PT, zumba class, 2hr gym session, insanity class, boxercise and school run/2.
I'd probably have burnt more just living when I weighed in at twice what I weigh now.0 -
From exercise 3200 kcal (not including usual body usage) - cycled 100K with recumbent trike, dog in a trailer and panniers. It was really tough!1

I once did a ultra distance inline skating event of 140 km. Six hours of skating with the pack paced by bicycles and hourly 10 minute breaks for food. Unlike running, it is pretty hard to eat and skate at the same time.
It was the only time I hit the wall, about a half hour from the finish line. I suddenly became very confused and struggled to coordinate skating movements. Hitting the wall really hammers home that your muscles can run on fat, but your brain only runs on glycogen. Someone from the organization saw me struggling and tore off a corner of a hotel serving packet of jam and told me to suck on it. I was dazed and complied. A few minutes later my mind suddenly cleared and I could finish the event.4 -

My first question would be how you calculated the 1,600 cal expended on exercise. That's about what I'd burn running a half-marathon.

Think this is my highest calorie expenditure day.

The exercise was a hilly 9 hour / 209km cycle ride.
Taking such a large chunk out of my day when your eating is limited by how much your stomach can handle while exercising hard meant there was no chance I could eat right up to my calorie goal.
How TdeF riders manage to eat so much over three weeks to keep up with their expenditure must take a lot of practice and dedication.3 -
I really struggle as well, I bonked once and god it was awful. I ride heavy not fast and just can't seem to eat enough through the puffing. I get sickened by too much sugar (gels are vile and dates are my thing but still sickly sweet) there are only so many banans you can eat! any savoury tips would be great
PS I have seizures so no-food dizzy spells worry me! 0 -

The last couple of years I've incorporated Gu Roctance into my long ride nutrition. 2 scoops in a water bottle gives you about 250 cal + electrolytes and hydration. As it's in liquid form it's never given me any stomach issues.

Tour de France riders top up with intravenous feeds. It was kind of a scandal about 10 years ago when a Dutch team all came down ill and had to withdraw because their intravenous feed got contaminated. The team spent a lot of time explaining to the press that intravenous feeds were not doping and using them was within the rules.0 -

So the one instance I bonked I was rescued by a hotel serving satchet of jam, given to be by someone from the organization of my ultra distance event. So it would seem that those high tech gels are not really necessary. I imagine having a fast food satchet of ketchup on hand would do the trick too.1 -

1.25hr weightlifting
ran 2 miles
1.5hr basketball game
Total 1600 cals according to the polar fitness. That seems correct based on a chart I found on the internet. Most of if was the basketball. I'm 6'3" 200lbs0 -
I can't quickly find it, but the biggest days for me are all from hiking. It's one of those activities that you do all day, so it really can burn a lot. (Perhaps 600kcals/hr for a 4 hour climb, then 300kcals/hr for the descent = 3600kcals, which sound about right.)1

IDK...a lot. I was a double ration in boot camp and still had a hard time holding onto weight.0

I ran a marathon this past weekend and Garmin said I burned 1328 calories. My total burn for the day was 3110 calories which accounts for the 7 additional miles of walking I did that day (33.2 miles total for the day). My Garmin data has proven to be pretty reliable based on my logging. Stinks to be short and old.2

Nothing this year, so I looked up my last two races in training peaks. Data source is my garmin watch(swim/run) and power meter(bike). On June 2, 2018 for a HIM distance race: 437cal swim, 2119 cal bike, 1096 cal run= 3652 calorie expenditure during the race. On August 19, 2018 for a full IM distance race: 903cal swim, 3239 bike, unknown cal during run.(turned off garmin) Based on 4142 cals for bike and run, guessing another 2k for the run? so roughly 6k to complete the race.
As others mention, during extended efforts the nutrition plan becomes very important. If you only have about 2Kcal of fuel in your body at the starting line, replenishment is key during the race.3 -

There are a number of foods that may be helpful. Two popular ones that come to mind are chicken broth and pickle juice. Both are huge sources of sodium and would be easy to carry on the bike or while running, whether in a water bottle or a hand held bottle tucked into your cycling shirt. (Think of the small bottles used to hold GU/water mixtures). Pretzels are another one that I see quite often at races. I've also had good luck with the various waffles(Gu, Honey Stinger, etc.) since the honey is wrapped in a cookie/waffle type shell. They are not as syrupy sweet as gels.
As far as an emergency "bonk recovery" drink, regular Coca Cola is hard to beat. If your nutrition plan fails and you start to bonk, drinking a can of regular Coke delivers an large dose of both sugar and salt that takes effect quickly. You'll feel better almost immediately and can then resume your normal nutrition plan.2 -

These oatmeal lace cookies (without the chocolate) are like a chewy honey wafer. I have used them for fuel in a race before when I was having stomach issues and I found the combination of carbs to be very satisfying and easy to eat. Maybe worth a try, even if not for a race (they are quite a tasty cookie!)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm gonna try the Stroopwaffles and Pretzels. Both don't have that sugary mouth feel.
I took a can of coke riding with me once and the constant vibration/ rough surface made the can explode. I nearly shat myself !!!!

Note to self: Bring "flat" coke on the next ride, lol!1 -
I get dried fruit for really long days. I can go 8 or 10 hours without food, I feel like I won't make it through 20+ without eating. Dried orange and Mandarin slices are great!1

My actual logged record is 2500 exercise calories burned from running a half marathon, and whatever else I did that day.
Most likely when I was younger I surpassed this though long days of landscaping and construction work or playing multiple games of hockey, basketball or soccer in the same day.1 -

I don’t like the very sweet snack or processed foods on long ride. My favs are homemade trail mix (favorite salty nuts and raisins), dried apricots, PBJ and rice cakes bites.
There’s a lot rice cake recipes out there but I like this one the best

I've definitely burned over 4,000 calories in 24 hours; that was the 24-hour sponsored hike I did

I also burn over 1,500 most Sundays, due again to hiking.1
