So just got back from 10 days of vacation in Tennessee and Florida. Lots of eating out, especially at Disney and Universal. My goal was to get through the trip without adding any pounds (just looking to maintain). Well two days in I decided it was vacation and I wasn't going to log calories (it kind of annoys my wife anyway so it was good to take a break). I definitely splurged here and there (ice cream, burgers, candy, etc) but at the same time was concious of what I was eating and tried to keep things somewhat in control. I was also aware of the potential impact of additional exercise from walking around the parks and took that into account as well.

The end result when I weighed in this morning after my workout? Not only did I not gain a pound, I actually managed to lose another pound while on Vacation!! Yes folks it can be done. I think more exciting than the scale victory though is knowing that I don't have to nitpick every calorie in my daily log in order to maintain a healthy weight. I've actually learned how to just live and make smart choices about food and can do it without a food and exercise diary. That said, I'm back to logging as of today :)

GREAT JOB! Be careful for the calories creeping back in... logging keeps you realistic...

Great to hear... I wish I was able to do it like that but for now I'll stick to my diary. I must say however that I've started to get a good idea about how many calories are in certain foods by logging but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah that's pretty much where I'm at right now too. Logging all my food has helped me know better what I'm eating. But now that vacation is done I'm back to logging again because I don't want to lose momentum. I'm 2 lbs away from my goal weight and I have a lot of other goals yet to achieve. Plus I don't want to (as someone else mentioned) let calories start sneeking in again until I'm right back where I was. I've committed myself to making a permanent change and if the diary becomes permanent as a part of that then so be it. However it was nice to know that I can go at least a short while without it, eat some junk food and still manage to not screw myself up.
