Nice job! In response to getting faster. I have the following burned in my brain from my much more experienced running friends.

"Run a lot, mostly easy, sometimes hard"

Sounds simple right? Basically the rule means that you should run 4-5 times per week and most of the time it should be at an easy pace with perhaps 1 hard effort and 1 long run each week. For my hard run I typically do one of the following.

    Track Workout: 400-800 Repeats

Fartlek: This is a Swedish word and I am not sure of the exact meaning. In regards to running it means random intervals. Run hard to the stop sign then slow down and recover. Pick another spot, next street maybe 400-800 yards away and then easy pace again. etc.

Tempo Run: These are typically shorter distances of 3-5 miles. If it's say a 3 mile tempo run then I would go really easy for 1/2-3/4 mile then hard for 2 miles or so then easy for the last 1/2-3/4. The Tempo runs help teach me how to run hard for extended periods. I find they also help me break through the mental blocks

This method trimmed my 5K time from 33 Minutes to 24 Minutes over the course of 6 months.

Great job! I just did my first 5k a couple weeks ago and I noticed that doing the actual race knocked a full minute per mile off of my time. Having the people around really motivated me to push harder. You might run much faster around people, if that wasn't the case already.

The first one is for survival! lol I will be doing my first 5K post-baby in a couple of weeks. I'm struggling mentally knowing I did a half marathon last year and have to start over from being sidelined. Survival is my goal for this one.
