Setting my weight goal is a real challenge for me!

I've been trying to decide what my true goals are. To actually set my weight goal and write it down is much more difficult for me than I thought it would be!. It's bringing up some issues that I didn't know I had!

If I set my goal at a weight that seems too low, I feel like I'm setting myself up for a letdown. But if I don't set a real goal that I would be ultimately happy with, well then, what's the point? It has been so many YEARS since I have been at a weight that makes me really happy, that I can't even imagine being there and looking like that. But to just settle for "being comfortable in my clothes" seems like a copout and not really an ultimate GOAL.

I checked my BMI on this website and, based on that, I have a LOT to lose before I'm even considered in the "healthy" weight range and it just seems impossible for me, at my age, to get there. I just have such a LONG way to go.....

and I very rarely think about doing something super special for myself, so I'm even having a hard time thinking of rewards for myself when I obtain my goals!

I do have some issues!! It would be great to hear from anyone who has had similar thoughts and struggles....thanks for your support. :)

Well. I have a really long way to go. Even at the my goal weight, I would still be in the "overweight" category on BMI. Here is the way I figure it. I'm very comfortable with my goal (to lose 68 lbs). I hope that I will reach my goal weight and re-evaluate then re-set my goals.

The truth is that you will never stop making goals. This ensures that you won't return after you "finish". Good luck!

Pick a goal... I find it better to aim for a goal and work towards it... if I aim for 10,000 in savings but only reach 7500.... well I'm far better off than I was before I set the goal, just need a bit more discipline to get that final bit in. Same as weight, my current "end" goal is 175 lbs, that's 155lbs down from where I started... yikes! that's a long way, but I'm about 30 lbs towards it, and seeing this work so I can stick with it.
  • One foot in front of the other. The only thing unrealistic is expecting the change to happen quickly. If you are consistent and give yourself a year you will be amazed at how far you've come (says the pot to the kettle).

Maybe you could set an intermediate goal and know that you are free to revise it as it gets closer to completion.

You could always set mini goals like pretty much everyone else here does! Like your first goal could be to fit comfortably in your clothes! or to lose 10 lbsll whatever it is.. and just work towards each mini goal. It isnt as intimidating!

Try looking at it 10 lbs at a time. It can be very overwhelming if you have a lot to lose. Smaller increments makes it easier to achieve your goals. Also, if you haven't already, make your ticker show how many pounds you've lost rather than how many you need to lose. Good luck!

If you are having trouble setting an ultimate goal weight do smaller goal weights, like every ten pounds. That way no end disappointment, and when you feel really good about the way you look then stop. And it can be tiny rewards, like going to the movies, or a pedicure etc.

Nothing is impossible! Just make sure you set realistic goals. What I like to do is set up mini goals for myself. Of course I have my ultimate goal but I figure that when I reach my mini goals and I look and feel good about myself, then I've accomplished something already.

    Good luck!
  • Why are you not worth life's little rewards. Add me as a friend if you like. We all have battles we fight about ourselves in this journey.

Mary, I'm a nurse and see overweight/obese people every day. I'm on a personal and professional mission to educate my patients on learning to rethink what "healthy" looks like! I think you should set a goal weight that will put you at the top of the healthy BMI range--but set small rewards for yourself for every 10 lbs you lose. This should keep you motivated and focused on short-term goals. Once you reach your goal weight--re-evaluate things. Are you at a comfortable weight that you can maintain with proper nutrition and exercise?? If so, then you are probably at YOUR personal goal weight. Good luck!! Add me if you'd like--I love to encourage others on their journey.

I started having weight issues when I was 9 years old. I have NO earthly clue what I would look like at a healthy weight, or even what a healthy weight for me is as an adult. I struggled with setting my goal weight for several days when I first started. I finally decided to just set mine to my next goal (something I know without a doubt that I want to achieve), and when I get there, I'll decide on my next goal at that time. No need for me to make a lifelong decision today when I know it will probably change over time anyway.
