Hi,
I have always bought my chicken at whoel foods, but since trying to eat more protein my grocery bills are going up. Has anyone done the switch from Whole foods to trader joes and what do you think?
Thanks

I haven't done the switch, but I buy Smart Chicken (MBA Brand) at our local [high end] grocery. It's vegetarian fed, air chilled, and not as much of a premium as organic (though it also comes in organic).0

My experience with Trader Joe's meat is: it is all pre-packaged and expensive. (no butcher on site) The first time I shopped at T.J's was last year, went to buy a whole chicken and it was $10. I know you get what you pay for in most cases, but I ended up going to Safeway and bought organic chicken much cheaper.0

One of my favorite "indulgences" is Trader Joe's mandarin chicken (in the frozen section). It's 190 calories per cup (210 if you add a tbsp of the sauce) and totally delicious. A bit on the high end in terms of sodium but hey, life is short. Plus because of the other things I eat, I can have this for dinner and still be well under 2400 mg of sodium in a day. In general, I think Trader Joe's has great stuff so long as it's not produce. In the produce department, Whole Foods will always win.
Also, if you're looking to increase protein, have you looked at the Trader Joe's greek yogurt? It has 120 calories per cup (the fat free stuff), and 22 g of protein. And it's a lot cheaper than the popular Greek yogurts (Fage, Chobani) I used to buy.
Also look at the Trader Joe's brands of cereal - a bunch of those have a decent amount of protein.0 -
I always find everything to be alittle less expensive at Trader Joe's, I'd totally shop there every week if I could get EVERYTHING I needed and didn't have to go to another store for certain things. Wegmans has a great selection of meats but are priced pretty high!

I love trader joes mandarin chicken. My husband and I use to eat chinese food on Fridays. I had to stop but my husband did not.so I make my mandarin chicken and trader joes shrimp fried rice and I feel like I am still enjoying chinese friday. ,However it has a lot less calories. You are right the sodium is not good but it is alot better than the chinese food I was eating.
