I'll just say it. I'm short. (and don't go there with the "you're fun-sized" comment)
I'm 32 and 4' 11" and currently at 162 lbs (which as you know, is a lot for a short girl!).
Just looking for MFP friends (5' 1" and under?) who can relate to the "issues" of being about my size.

I'm 5'1 and I can totally relate to what may not be alot of weight for some people may be alot for someone who is less vertically-endowed. Any extra breath you take will cause you to gain weight

Losing is NOT easy...it took adding 45 mins, 5x/wk of moderate to high intensity cardio, plus counting calories, PLUS being sure to eat mostly "clean/quality" food instead of processed crap. For me, just counting the calories wasn't and isn't enough, I have to actually care WHAT I eat too. SO hard, but so worth it in the long run. My cholesterol, which is genetically terrible, has already come down 60 points with these changes alone.0 -

This! I always wondered why some people seemed to just lose the weight overnight while I was stuck at the same weight (currently stuck where I'm at) and you have to add more cardio and watch what you put in vs what you burn. Buuutt...we can do it0 -
I am 5' 1" and can't loss any weight, no matter what I do. I been logging my food for 20 days into MFP and I work out 6 days a week. I am getting so frustrated.0

I'm 4'11 and was up to 196 pounds when I finally decided to change my lifestyle and get healthier. I've been between 130 and 140 pounds the past few years, and am still trying to get down to maybe 120 or so. I'm great at exercising, but unfortunately I'm also great at eating, so that's where my main struggle is. Feel free to friend me (just let me know you're a fellow shorty).0

4'11" -- Started at 198... (Uuuuuugh!) -- And, I'm OLDER, so weight loss is a major fight (otherwise, I'd be thinner, already).0

I'm vertically challenged @ 5' Even! Started on MFP about a month ago @ 195, CW is 188. It's been a challenge and I have a whole bunch of lbs to loose but I'm taking baby steps to my success!! Don't wanna look like an Oompa Loompa anymore=-/0

I've seen some very good advice on this on here. I would post a screech for help. The calories taken in versus calories burned equation is NOT simple math. There's a whole science to making certain your body actually burns fat, and I've done just about everything wrong.
You MAY be trying too hard, or you may have a poor balance of protein/carbs. I immediately changed my protein/carb/fat percentages to 40/30/30. A lot of times, you will need higher protein and FAR fewer carbs (the default recommendations do NOT work for me). It also matters when you eat those carbs. If you eat carbs right before you exercise, your body burns what you just took in and leaves your fat right where it is. If you are also exercising heavily, you might be burning fat, but replacing it with muscle, which is heavier. I would also suggest that you make certain that you eat your exercise calories. Do NOT make a large deficit. Keep your net AT the recommended level and no smaller, or your body will go anabolic on you. You can't really starve a body into submission.
Good luck!0 -
I'm 4' 10" and was borderline obese - while it's harder for us short people to create a large calorie deficit, so it takes longer to lose weight, on the plus side a pound that we lose looks like two pounds on someone normal!0

Whatever you're eating, are you weighing / measuring everything accurately? Okay, maybe not lettuce, but anything with a significant calorie content. One of the commonest reasons for people to fail to lose weight, especially when starting a healthier lifestyle is simply that they're eating far more than they think.0 -
I'm also 4'11 (well, actually 4'10.5). I started out at 160 lbs and have lost 30 lbs since joining MFP in January. I took the summer off, but have been trying to get myself back on the wagon. It's been kinda tough to get back into the swing of things, but I hope to lose another 15 lbs at which point I'll re-evaluate my goals.
Feel free to add me as a friend0 -
i'm 4' 11 1/2" but i usually just say 5 foot. i am currently 121, but i started mfp at 151, 2 pounds from obese. i want to get down to 110.0

Thanks for you advice! I only been logging my food for 25 days on MFP. In May my husband and I moved from Germany to the US (we are in the military) and I gained close to 10lb. I thought I would speed things up by NOT eating my exericse calories. I also was under my recommended calories. I just started eating all my exericse calories. I do a lots of heavy weight training (3x a week, 60 min.) with Cathe Friedrich and I do cardio ( 3x a week, 60 min, step, running, kickboxing ) plus I do JM30DS and I walk my dogs every day over 30 - 40 min a day. Thanks again!0 -

LOL, I didn't relized my diary wasn't open,it's open now! I do weigh/mesure everything that goes into my mouth. Someone pointed out, that I wasn't eating enough calories? I thought, by not eating my excerise calories I would lose the lb faster.
Thanks for your imput!0 -
im 5'1" i started at 188 lbs which is over obese :frown: i have lost 12 lbs so far now im at 176, my goal is to be 125-130 lbs. It is not easy to lose weight when ur short its alot of hard work and ups and down, just have to keep going:drinker:0
-
I'm 5'1" and started at 152, I'm just shy of 20lbs lost and have about 1/2 way to my goal. I've been here for 2 months and love the support i get from my friends on here. I found a love for running but developed tendonitis in my foot and JUST started exercising yesterday after almost a 3 week break.
I still continued to lose though by going by the 1200 calorie recommendation so that kept me motivated. I am so excited to be going to the gym again though!0 -
Wow this is great, Ladies! I'm so glad that I have found friends who understand the frustrations that I have. Here's where I'm at and I'm looking for feedback....
let the rant begin:
I started getting serious about losing weight in May when I was about 176-78ish. I was going to the gym at least 4-5 days a week for about 2 weeks straight. cardio every day and about 3-4 days on weights (alternating upper and lower). On good weeks I would get to the gym 6 days. I got sick for a week and got off track for about 2 weeks but then got back into it. I've been REALLY good about tracking and working out this summer....2 months and only down 12 lbs. Now, I know that it's not always wise to only go by what the scale says but here's the thing... I haven't noticed much change in my clothes either. My chest is smaller but that's about it. Arms are the same as they were in May and thighs are down a little bit. I just don't see a whole lot of physical change.....
I feel the most productive on the elliptical.... I don't like the treadmill at all. I've thought about doing the classes at my gym but I've been real nervous about that... maybe because I'm particularly shy and reserved. maybe because I can't see just how many calories I'm burning (I need to get a HRM...i know).
Why haven't I lost as much as a lot of other people? I see others have 15-25lbs lost in 2 months and I have to wonder what I'm doing wrong. Is all I'm losing is water weight? it sure seems like it. I also seem to have a lot of edema (water retention) in my legs....something I've always had, but it seems to be worse lately. I have just had blood work done 2 weeks ago and all was normal.
I so wanted to be 20lbs lighter by the time school started and we started trying for kids.... this is the hardest I've ever worked and yet I have lost, I still feel like I'm not getting the results that I should be, given my efforts. I have plans to see a nutritionist as well...just an fyi.
Help.:frown:0 -
Hey fellow shorties!
I decided to search for some friends in the same situation as me....
I have ALWAYS struggled with my weight.. and no matter what I tried nothing ever seemed to work.. until I found MFP.
I'm so happy to say I'm at my half way mark. I used to think it was impossible for me.. I understand how difficult it is, and I also understand the frustrations of not being able to carry an extra 5lbs well AT ALL. Shopping for clothes is hard enough being short.. add some excess weight into the mix and trying on clothes is enough to start a CRYathon.
We may be short, but don't let that stop you from standing TALL, we can do this!!
Age: 23
Height: 5'1"
Starting weight: 185lbs
Current weight: 151lbs
Goal weight: 125lbs0 -
Hey there, I am 5'1" and CW is 126. SW was 135. I have been doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred and sticking to my calories, can"t wait until I reach my goal. Its alot of hard work, but I know us shorties can do it!
Feel free to add me as a friend if you like!0 -
OK. Where are you girls buying your clothes?!?!?!?!?! I can't find anything anywhere!!!! I was sooo hoping that since I'm down 13lbs I would be feeling and seeing more of a change. Nothing fits differently and shopping still sucks. if I buy to fit my gut, the sleeves are to my knees and I look just awful. All I can seem to find is cardigans with something loose underneath. I want to wear cute things - not the frumpy ugly crap that I have been. so exasperated right now.......0
-
Yeah, shopping is the worst....I had always figured that when I lost weight, shopping would suddenly be for me like I thought it was "supposed" to be for women (everything just looks so great, it's hard to spend less than a million dollars in each store, or something), but it's actually gotten worse, I think. I need a different size for my waist than for my hips and that along with the height thing (I'm 4'11) makes pants nearly impossible. Good seamstresses are expensive and I don't know how to tell if pants that don't fit in the store would fit with a tailoring or not.
I know you've already tried Kohl's, but that and Old Navy have been the best for me, but by "best" I really just mean that they sometimes have passable clothes...but I still don't feel GOOD about almost any of my clothes. When I was bigger, I could pretty much rely on Fashion Bug or Lane Bryant to have something for me and I was slightly less picky about looks (I just needed my clothes to fit). But of course, I'd rather be healthy and have my current problems than go back to how things were!
Good luck and I look forward to seeing other responses here!0
