The Gastric Sleeve Community

Hi everyone, I am about 3 weeks into this incredibly exciting and scary journey that is the Gastric Sleeve surgery. Although I may not look it, I had over 45% body fat and heaps of health issues related to being morbidly obese and so I was taken into consideration for this surgery. I had a 'life-threatening' illness, medically. This kind of helped me face what I needed to get done, but had sunken into too much despair to get it done. This surgery has given me hope again.

I want to hear some of your stories and start a support group that isn't here to crack a whip on the back of weight loss nor is that a competition, but we did get this done for a reason and we want to make sure we are getting the results we need, right?

All are welcome, please come. Share your story with us.
I only got this brilliant idea while I am in the office and about to start work so when I get more time, I will share some more of my story.

I had the gastric sleeve surgery nearly 5 years ago. I lost 100 lbs but due to many life circumstances have gained all but 60 lbs back. I’m here trying to lose it again because I don’t want to get sick again. I still get the restriction the sleeve gave me as a tool, but I’m living proof it’s just a tool. I’m an open book. I’ll tell you honestly - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Just ask :)

I am also 5 years post op. I started at 400lb and made it down to 198. Never made it to my goal weight of 175. I completely agree with Aerohead21. It is only a tool. I slacked in my eating and exercise and started to gain back my weight. I was back to 250. I have gone back to the things that I know are required to maintain a steady weight loss and maintain healthy behaviors. I did my surgery with my best friend and she has gained all of her weight back. My sister is 2 years out from hers and she looks amazing and is sticking with her meal plan. I have another friend that had hers 1 year ago yesterday and while she looks amazing she doesn't exercise or eat right so she may not succeed.

I would never change my decision to have the sleeve. It completely changed my life for the better. Best decision I have ever made. I do wish I had stuck with what I knew needed to be done. I am working on it now and will hit my goal. Feel free to ask anything. I am also an open book. From diet to exercise to skin!

I just happened to stroll to this thread. My daughter single and 32 is 306 lbs. She really needs to lose, has a fatty liver and having some other complications (minor t this time) due to her weight. Also she has never dated. She and I have thought about the gastric sleeve for her but she is scared and so am I. Thank for posting it as a tool as I am more inclined to just not Tis week 1 we are just eating liquids. Atkins shakes and soup. Not healthy and only for 1 week just to kick start our appetite control. Typically after having gastric surgery what type of meals do you eat to sustain weight loss? I am wondering if following such a plan would be good even without the surgery.

@Ming1951 you follow mainly a keto diet. Depending on which surgery you have, you have different rules but for the most part - always take your vitamins, stay hydrated, and don’t fall into old habits. You can eat around your pouch and find foods that don’t make you feel full so you overeat. Our doctors modify the keto diet so that after two months you reintroduce carbs but you pick good ones. We have nutritionists and support groups at our disposal. We have so much support.
