Hi everyone, I am new (5 days) to the site and have just been begun reducing calories in order to lose weight. It's going pretty good but when I tell people that I've been allotted 1200 calories a day, they say that is way too low. I'm not very active and do not exercise-yet.
Can someone tell me approximately how many calories are burned by an older non-active adult per day? I've been eating 1200 per day and have lost 3 lbs in 5 days. I'm happy with that but am wondering if I should take it a little slower. I would be happy with losing 1-2 days per week. My ultimate goal is 20 pounds by Christmas. Started at 160 and am now at 157.

Thanks, JM

1200 does seem low, but it is doable.

Well done on losing so quickly - 160 to 140 in 15 weeks is ambitious, but you'll certainly be able to get closer to your goal!

1200 is what I get, but I am pretty active. I would use a calorie monitor, and see how many calories you burn throught the day (that is what the doctor I work for tells his patients). That way you get an idea of how many calories you are bburning on a normal day.

1200 is what I have been quoted by MFP but sometimes I am too hungry or light headed so I will go over. I am exercising too though so I feel that even if I do go over my alloted calories I don't worry too much.

Don't tell anyone how many calories you are eating LOL! It depends on how tall you are and how active you are but as we age our bodies require less calories. That's why we can eat the same amount we did when we were younger but gain weight. The metabolism slows as we age. If you are losing weight stick with it!!!

Thanks for the responses. I assume I'm burning more than 1200 calories a day since I'm losing weight. Just wish I knew how much so I can know how much I can go over once in awhile without erasing my gains. I'll search the web and see if they have anything..
