Running increasing appetite

Does anyone else have a problem with this? I'd like to add running to my regular workout routine, but every time I do my appetite goes through the roof and I end up *gaining* weight because all I want to do is eat.

But if I walk or do something less intense then I don't have as much of an issue.

Thoughts?

Yeah its because your burning a lot more calories running rather than walking. When you get hungry just try eating healthy foods instead of junk.
  • I am crazy hungry when I run a lot! Not so much on easier days, but the long run days...STARVING.

I'm with Jessica - on long run days I can be absolutely insatiable. Just make good decisions about replenishing nutrients. I follow a long run with a protein shake immediately, then have my regular meal (usually breakfast). I find this stems a lot of post-run body responses (hunger, fatigue, desire to sleep for the rest of the day, etc).

    I've never tried a protein shake....it's worth a shot!

What time of the day do you run? I find if I run in the evening I get very hungry, but if I run first thing in the morning before breakfast I don't. I went to the gym today after work and did a work out on the elliptical and would really really like to eat now. I am drinking herbal tea to get that full filling.

I run when I get home from work at 6pm every night. Then I eat dinner around 7:30.....but because I'm so hungry I can't ever stop eating :(

Running burns a lot of calories, but if you are eating the right things and run regularly it shouldn't make you gain weight! Fibrous veggies are great - you need complex carbs to fuel you :)

try some low fat chocolate milk after running? I found it very helpful. And recent studies show it's a very good alternative to those fancy sport drinks.

I would love to try chocolate milk, but unfortunately I'm allergic to dairy. I am also following a gluten free diet per my doctor's suggestion (digestive issues) so it's hard to grab something on the go sometimes depending on what ingredients are in a pre-made snack/meal

Ok another good suggestion is peanut butter - I often eat a tablespoon of peanut butter just straight off the spoon immediately before or after a run, and know lots of other runners who do too - keeps the tummy quiet :)

Before when I've tried to lose weight I ran, and YES the same thing happens to me! I would just starve all day.
This time, I'm trying to exercise more moderately, and somehow its working better. I'm far less hungry in general, and able to net 1200 or so per day easily. You might give a try to 30-60 mins of really brisk walking (< 3 mins per mile).

So as long as I'm eating good calorie food after I run I should still lose weight even if I eat a lil bit more than when I'm not running?

I'm wanting to start (and did 3 times, then got really tired/sick feeling so am going to go again tonight) but I want to freaking lose weight not gain more!! (like thats not why everybody else is here LOL but still)

Yes! I definitely feel hunger pains after running so I usually eat some nuts. It makes me feel better and I don't feel the need to eat to get full at that point. Just a little something to stop feeling so hungry.

Make sure you are drinking enough water. You will lose a lot more due to sweating when running. Thirst can mask itself as hunger. Good luck.
