Finding time...

My biggest challenge in weight loss is how to manage time in order to ensure I get excercise in during the week. I've heard over and over..'put yourself first and make the time'. I understand this, but having a family, a son with a degenerative disease, working, travelling over an hour to get back and forth to work takes up so much time that I can't always find the time. I'm looking for suggestion of how to get in activity especially on those days that there seems less than enough time - maybe there are some activities that I can do that I'm not aware of? What has worked for you?

    Write down your current weekly schedule. It's prolly not as bad as you think.

    i have very busy days as well. i just sacrifice an hour of sleep in the morning by getting up early and getting a p90x or insanity workout in every morning.

    I work at a desk all day so I bought a peddler to put under my desk, hand weights for air punches, thigh master and tension bands I tied to chair that I use to work my arms and legs!

    I try to get a few squats in by doing 5 every time I get out of my chair. Thankfully no one is in my office but me.

    I get an hr for lunch at work so I try to get atleast a 30 min walk in but I've been getting 45 mins in. I eat my lunch at my desk before I walk so I can still have time to eat. Then after work I put my work out clothes on so I have no excuse not to stop at the gym on my way home. I try to work out at the gym for an hr but if I'm in a hurry I try to get atleast 30 mins in. That way I get an hr exercise every day. Your situation may be different. My kids are all grown so I don't have anyone at home that depends on me like you do with your son. I have found now since I've been going to the gym and walking during lunch it has become a habit and I feel bad and grouchy if for some reason I don't get my workout in. Hope that helps a little.:smile:

    Coffee breaks and lunch time - walk around outside if you can - up and down stairs on bad days.

    Get up an hour earlier or stay up an hour later than your son.

    Or, I'm not sure how old (or what level of his disease he's at) but could he help you at all? He could help you count reps or watch the timer. Or if he's a little older, you could put on a workout video and mute it and have him read a story to you (or make a story up).

    You don't have to work out by yourself, try to think of ways to get him involved.


    Edited to add: sometimes I do squats while standing at the stove, and I skip or dance/twirl around the room. It's not necessarily about doing a workout, its about getting moving and getting your heart rate up.

    Love it very creative...thank goodness for private offices

    Thats what you have to do it be creative...I'm a single mom with 2 little ones...I get up 1 hour early so 4:30am each day for me to have an hour to exercise. You can do simple things like practice tightening your stomach and glute muscles on that long drive time, do situps while helping the kids do homework, squats when you are bending to do things, etc. There are ways you just have to fine what works for you.

    If it's possible try and get into the gym or go on a walk during your lunch breaks. I only see my fella at the weekends so I don't do anything like gym then but I chose activities that are active like hiking or surfing so we can spend time together and get an exercise fix in as well. If you can do similar then that would help.

    It might also be worth looking at your schedule and seeing where you can fit things in or be more efficient. I tend to blitz most of the house chores into one day and make double when i'm cooking so I can reheat it another day and say time on cooking.

    You just need to mark off maybe 2 hours in your day depending on your schedule. I say 2 hours because if you're going to the gym, you need to account for driving time. That aside, you also need to account for showering & getting ready if you're doing other things afterwards such as going to work/school/out, etc. I typically workout at least an hour, if I drive to the gym, that's another 30 mins roundtrip, plus about 20-30 for shower/getting ready. So think about that and then find a time to squeeze it in. Do you need to wake up earlier, push some things aside?
