Carmine is also used in lipstick and makeup to give color..thats why there are vegan makeups. I used to be vegan so I knew about that and the gelatin.
Thanks for the websiteThis is one reason I buy stuff plain, including yogurt, and flavor it myself lol. We do not have to be told exactly whats in our food.

I already knew about carmine... to be fair, a LOT of cultures eat bugs. Really, it's not much different than eating say... chicken, or pork. Bugs are animals, some of em taste good apparently. I'm ok with it. I do think, though, that manufacturers should have to at least include something to warn consumers, because allergies are possible, and also vegetarians and vegan should know what they're ingesting.
The seaweed one really doesn't bother me. and gelatin... ya that's gross but I sure do love those little gummi bears! :laugh:0 -
Aww, kerri - now I will never look at a drumstick or porkchop the same.....0

oddly enough... none of this really bothers me. I'm not going to avoid eating something i like just because there are ground insects in it... it tastes good.
Plus, I cannot count how many times I've eaten bugs just because I had my mouth open at the wrong time... think riding a bike while smiling... We all will eat bugs over the course of our lifetime, whether we know it or not.
I understand the concern for vegans, and for possible allergic reactions.0 -
There are actually bug parts in the vast majority of our food, but if it makes up less than a certain percentage the FDA isn't required to label it. So, we've all been eating them for years and it's never been a problem. I actually took an class on insects in society last semester and for one of the labs we had to eat bugs.
Our teacher had all different recipies with everything from crickets to ants to little worms, and the actually weren't too bad once you got past the stigma. It's a part of many cultures and not really any different than eating beef or chicken. Easier actually because I sometimes feel slightly bad for killing a cute animal, and I have never thought of most bugs as cute!
