Can you drink too much water? Also, I was wondering if anyone else has a hard time with quenching their thirst? It seems to me since I starting my weight loss with MFP I feel thirsty all the time!!
I haven't changed what I eat just portions and I am also hiking a great deal compared to my couch potato ways. I recently had a physical at the doctors but everything is normal. But what is up with being thirsty?

    How much are you drinking?
  • I drink 5 to 6 liters a day. and when I need a change I add lemon juice.

I drink about 9 cups a day. The only other beverage I have regularly is tea or a coffee. That's about it.
  • Here's a good website to calculate about how much you should drink. I drink 12-16 cups a day usually, sometimes a little more, depending on how much exercise I do.

Are you spacing out your water throughout the day? I know that I sometimes drink most of my water while at work and then when I get home some nights I won't drink anything so I will be really thirsty the next day. Also, I would be careful with lemon juice as it is a diarhetic and I would think make you thirstier in the end.
  • You *can* drink too much, but 9 a day isn't going to do it. I am usually at or above a gallon-sometimes a gallon and a half, and I am just fine... I do make sure to compensate for lots of sweating and lots of water by having a little extra salt...

The thirst thing happened to me when I first started actually drinking more water. It'll go away in a week or two :)

It is possible to drink too much water and possibly die of hyper-hydration, but it has to be under a certain set of rare circumstances. Typically people who get water poisioning compete in water drinking contests or go for extreme periods of intense exercise (think marathon or triathalons) without replenishing electrolytes but continuing to drink water.

I drink a gallon (or more) of water on workout days and about 3/4 gallon on non-workout days. You are probably thirsty because you are not drinking enough water. Listen to your body and drink if you are thirsty. Under normal circumstances, you can't drink too much water; unless you are specifically trying to do so.

Tbh if anything you drink too little. 8 cups a day is what you should have without exercise or heat. Tea dehydrates you every cup you drink you wee out a cup and a half. Is your urine clear and without much colour? If it is your drinking enough urine isn't normally colored too much unless it is conerntrated (like when you go in the morning), you aren't drinking enough or you take multivitamins.

When I was pregnant I was averaging 3-4L a day which is like 12-16glasses but normally I drink between 8-12 glasses a day (a glass being 250mls) I drink more if I am exercising or hot
