How can I keep from getting shin splints they start about 10 mins into my walk and keep hurting for about 24 hours. Is it my shoes or being overweight?

Check out ChiRunning. It made a huge difference in my pain. Also try running sleeves, and follow RICE after a run.0

You probably need better shoes. I went to the "Running Store" and had them do quick tests on my feet on a treadmill then they can tell you exactly what type of shoes or insole you need. Their shoes were a bit pricey but once you figure out what kind of shoe you should be using you can always buy the shoes somewhere else... Good luck0

It can be your shoes, walking too fast, doing lots of hills, etc. While it hurts: rest, elevation, ICE!. Strengthening you ankle muscles can help such as pretending to draw your ABC's with your big toe progressing to doing it against resistance bands. I'd start by buy good shoes if yours are old. If you persist you might ask your Dr. about physical therapy.0

Doing ankle rotations helped me. While you are just sitting around, move your foot around in circles, both ways. It really does seem to help. Another thing you can do while you walk is to alternate you're walking with toe walking and heel walking. You don't to go far but try and work it in a few times while you are out there. Ice on them after your walks too!0

I have heard that overstriding can lead to shin splints, so maybe try to shorten your gait?0
