i'll be going to Mexico in a few weeks for my honeymoon (Cancun, to be exact). we are all inclusive at a few restaurants in the area, so i am wondering if you have any tips of foods to try that aren't going to kill my calories. also, how about fresh food intake? i've heard tons of "don't drink the water/eat fresh fruit/fresh veggies" to avoid getting sick. any tips?

thanks guys!

Im frOm mex so my body is used to all the crap and how they prepare it n stuff, but i dont recomment eating anything from the streets. Its the best food eventhough hygiene is iffy but for someone thats not tolerant it can ruin ur trip!

I went to Mexico in May. We stayed for 5 days. I did not get sick, buy my guy had a stomach bug for a good month before he saw the doctor and nipped it with antibiotics. The all-inclusive resort we stayed at didn't even give us a chance to drink the water. Everything was bottled, and you could see the chefs working, using bottled water in their recipes as well.

I actually ate healthier there than I do here. I just ate way too much of it. There were amazing side entrees of veggies and bits of potato and just weird things I've never had (and I don't even remember now).

I ate all I wanted and I drank chocolate milk by the gallon and boozed it up. I gained a whole 5 lbs while I was there, and lost it quickly after (within 2 weeks).

Go, enjoy thoroughly, and get straight back on track when you get home :)

Don't eat the "american" food which is pancakes, french toast, breakfast meat etc, hamburgers, fries and all that deep fried stuff.. Our buffet had steamed veggies and rice, salsa's, salads, fresh veggies and fruit. I did have guacamole (addicted to avocado) but not chips. Eat slow and schedule your meals. If you are going to drink, try vodka with real lime and soda it's 70 calories. Exercise, walk, swim, run and HAVE FUN!!!

oh right, we didn't leave the resort so we didn't eat the street food.

we also avoided the seafood stands simply because we aren't a big fan of it. my teammate (we traveled in a large group who won a contest, yay!) ate some seafood in the resort and got rather ill for a day.
  • I think you could order a meal called "Salpicón" which basically is a lettuce salad with tomato, avocado, onion and with some vinager and lemon on the top.
You should avoid everything that says: mole, tortilla, tacos and that stuff.
You can really rely on the cleanliness of food cooked in big restaurants and hotels. They have strict standards (like ISO 9000 certifications and that stuff) to ensure your health.
We may think that cleanliness ain`t the real problem, but the type of meals that you're stomach is not used to tolerate, like condiments, thick sauces like mole, obviously chile and all the combinations between that stuff with other meals.
Bottled water is a must and pick things that look familiar to you, because mexican food is really aggresive for stomach. Don't trust in the appreciation of others about chile, if they say "well, it´s just a little hot" you bet it will be like fire in your mouth.. haha
Don't worry, try to avoid things that are not familiar to you, realy on meat and fish (cooked) and enjoy a lot your honeymoon.
    Good luck :)
  • I went to cancun on my honeymoon in April, and the food was amazing. You will only get to experience your honeymoon once. I say don't worry about calories, enjoy the freedom! Obviously, healthy choices are great, but let yourself relax :) congrats on the wedding, best of luck!

I went to cuba last year expecting the worse and was ready for it with a bunch of stomach meds and i actually felt better on their food and it cured my stomach ailments that i was having before there once i got home. My advice is bring the meds.
  • A good rule of thumb I used when I was in MC, Xalapa, and Tlaxcala was NO STRAWBERRIES, fruit that you can peel the skin off of is usually okay, cooked veggies are alright. I don't know how cancun is, but the only time any of us got sick was when we ate at a fancy restaurant. Street food was all good and let us move on the go.

    HAVE FUN! I love mexico!
