MFP takes into account many different stats to calculate your weight loss calorie count. Your current weight, height, age, gender, how active you are etc. So if you are male, tall, more overweight, young and active - your count would be higher. But if you are shorter, weigh less, female, older and inactive your count would be less. It's different, of course for each person. Make sure you didn't make any mistakes when you entered your stats.4

I found in my settings it depends on how many lbs per week you want to lose that you set it on and it will adjust the calories as well2

Settings, profile, goals, weekly weight loss goal.
The more per week you say you want to lose, the fewer your calorie allowance.1 -
Whether or not it's appropriate for you depends on your current height, weight, gender, and activity levels (daily activity, not exercise, that's considered separately). You could use a TDEE calculator to get a general idea of where you are right now, but my experience MFP is pretty good for it's numbers, assuming you input your information correctly.2

Personally, I’ve lost consistently over the past 10 months eating 2000+ calories daily (total includes my routine calorie allotment plus eating back exercise calories). I’m female, 5’3, 34, 140s, with fairly active part time job and 3-4 sessions of personally enjoyable workouts (walking, biking, etc). For me, it’s been a slightly slower but much more maintainable weight loss process. Hey, I’m in it for lifelong change anyhow so who’s in a rush. So it is possible to lose weight at those numbers though as others have mentioned, your personal mileage may vary.
A decent plan may be to follow MFPs recommendations for several weeks (like 4+ weeks because bodies don’t always change as quickly or as uniformly as we want), gather your data, and make calorie adjustments from there.
Best of luck!7
