No such thing as a stupid question!! But you'll get lots of opinions. It's best to enter your stats into MFP, use their calorie guidelines for your goals and don't make your goals too fast(slow and easy is the best way). Technically, yes, you can eat whatever you want as long as you keep calorie count to 1200. You WILL lose lbs. BUT it's not the healthiest way to go, nor the most sustainable. It's best practice to give your body quality fuel and enough of it so that it continues to provide you with maximum health.
Good luck!!!9 -

Depending on your stats and goals you can probably eat more than 1200 calories and still lose weight.
And yes you can eat any food, in moderation, and be successful with your weight goals
Most people know that basic nutrition is important. I’m going to assume you do as well and aren’t planning to forgo things like eating a varied and balanced diet and aren’t intending to only eat cookies and chips.

I don't recommend starting at 1200 calories right off the bat. Going so low for a long period of time can lower your metabolism and continued weight loss to be more difficult for you. Slow and steady wins the race!
But when you pick a calorie amount that is right for you (whether that be 1300, 1800, or 2,000), then yes, you can essentially eat whatever foods you want and still lose weight. I've lost almost 100 pounds and have been no stranger to sweets or fatty foods during this time. I eat the same things as before, just less of it.
As WinoGelato says, basic nutrition is important. You can lose weight on nothing but junk food, but it's not ideal for your health!3 -
I agree that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and also that you will receive a lot of different responses to this inquiry because there is good research on so many differnt approaches. Some argue that only calories in/calories out matter in weight loss, while others get down a macro/micro level and argue that what comprises those calories is important. I would recommend that if this is something that you really want to learn about, you pick up one or two books on each side. A little education goes a long way.
For me, personally, a weight loss journey is about wellness. I have been around the block enough to know that being skinny is not really the height of my goals as much as feeling healthy in mind and body. When I take good care of myself, I feel powerful. My confidence grows; I know that I can maintain my weight loss when I am eating right. So, I think that the answer to your question is really in the details: do you care about health and maintaining sustainable outcomes in the long term, or do you care mostly about getting thin? It's a no judgment zone, so be frank. Let yourself be honest. We've all been there, just wanting to look hot or getting a revenge body, and not really caring much about health. Hell, the idea appeals to me still. But, I don't have time or space for that anymore.2 -
Weight = calories in and calories out
Health and satiety = exercise and what you eat (macro and micronutrients)
As for 1200 calories, that's not necessarily appropriate for you, for many people it's too aggressive. It depends on your stats whether or not it's appropriate.
If you're starting your weight loss journey, you don't need to be perfect. Start by eating at an appropriate calorie deficit and in the following weeks and months you can gradually work on improving what foods you eat.5 -
