Congrats! Are you counting calories, or following a diet plan?2

I’m doing Keto, it was super hard the first week because I had keto flu but everyday is getting easier.0
-
What is keto flu?2
-
You feel sick, just like a flu. Some people don’t get it bad but other people get it really bad, I had it really bad, I almost gave it up but so glad I didn’t. Once the flu symptoms passed I feel better than I have in years. It can last from one day to 3 weeks but most people are 1 week or less. I was a week. Lol2
-
Wow! That's incredible! If you don't mind me asking, how much do you have to lose?1
-
Lol a lot, i was 324 when I started and I’m 297 now and I’m only 5’4. I would have lost more but I was severely sick and had to go to the ER because I was so badly dehydrated. I was given a few bags of it fluids and the stuff they give when you are malnourished. It fixed me up but because I was so sick, my body went into starvation mode and in 2 days I put 12 pounds back on. It’s only about 8 days that my body has been back on track, too it off I got my period this week lmao. So next week I should see it start melting away again.2

You didn't go into starvation mode. Starvation mode is a myth. You regained water weight due to the IV fluids to address the dehydration. It is important to recognize the difference between water weight loss and fat loss. If I were you, I would increase my salt intake and water intake or you may ind yourself dehydrated again. Of your initial loss, approximately half of that was water weight based on the bounce back when fluid were replaced.
If keto works for you and is a preferred way of eating and sustainable, great. But there is a vast preponderance of evidence that proves keto is no more effective for fat loss than any other method of dieting. The large initial water weight loss will level out at some point and it will be calories in vs. calories out that determine fat loss.
Keto can be very helpful for some people in that it blunts hunger and helps people comply with their calorie goals. But, not matter what the diet modality, it all comes down to eating less calories than you burn for fat loss. The choice of diet modality should come down to sustainability and compliance.19 -

If you read my comment in full and not just looking for something to educate me on, you would have seen that I said I was sick, not keto flu when I had to go to the ER. Yes I retained water from being so badly dehydrated but I’m going to believe the ER Doctor over someone I don’t know. I was in Ketoacidosis and I’m not diebetic which is why the Doctor uses the word “starvation mode”. There is such thing as starvation mode, it’s just people use the word incorrectly.
I have also tried every diet out there over the past 20 years and Keto is by far the best for me. I was sceptical to go on it and put it off for years because I felt it was not healthy, until I had a discussion with my family Doctor about my weight problem. She is a specialist with the Keto diet, has been on the diet for 5 years herself and looks amazing. My brother is no longer diebetic because of the diet. Is it for everyone? No.... but people need to be educated on the diet by a health care professional before going on it to make sure they succeed.2 -

Putting on 12 pounds over 2 days of IV hydration isn't "starvation mode," it's pretty normal when one has been dehydrated. I'm not sure *what* the doctor meant by "starvation mode," but it doesn't cause someone to gain 12 pounds in 2 days.11 -
I was in starvation mode when I arrived at the hospital. She said that once I feel better I will gain both water weight a fat super quickly because I had been sick with a virus for so long. For almost 2 weeks my body did not absorb any nutrients and by the last 2 days, I wasn’t even peeing anymore. I was drinking Gatorade and it was coming out the other end the same Color. The virus I had she never even herd of before and had to go research it, she had never seen anyone not absorb any Gatorade before and having it come out the other end both smelling like it just came out of the bottle and looking it. I was coming in and out of it and was starting to go into kidney failure. That was just for starters and doesn’t include the issues with my heart, lungs and blood pressure.2

I hope you are doing better, and continue to have success with your diet.3

Thank you I’m much better and my system is finally back on track.1

Compiling all the comments/responses together, I’m thinking it is starvation Ketoacidosis (which is an actual thing-not common but it’s a thing) which can happen after lengthy fasting and/or when glycogen stores are depleted (eg low carb diet and/or exercise) and/or illness/infection and/or some other exacerbating condition.
The 12 pounds “gained” from this would be water as part of the treatment would be introducing/modulating glucose and perhaps insulin (Plus the whole dehydration thing and refilling glycogen stores).
I hope you stay well, OP.8 -
I think it's great that you have found a way that is sustainable for you. But, seriously, the whole starvation mode thing is nonsense. I don't care what the doctor said. The fact that they would say it is reason to question their credibility. If keto works for you and suits your preferences, great!
It is important to understand what is happening and what to expect for the future. All people on keto experience some fast weight drop at first as they lose water weight and reduce glycogen stores. It's the nature of the beast. That will slow down at some point and when it does, you need to be prepared for a more moderate rate of loss as you are now losing fat.
Just a side note, diabetes is not curable. People with T2D can go into remission through dietary changes, weight loss and exercise. But that doesn't mean they are cured. Many folks with T2D show improvement with lower carb or keto diets due to reduced blood glucose which improves their insulin sensitivity. Other things that can contribute to improving insulin sensitivity are intermittent fasting and exercise along with weight loss.
Congrats on your progress so far and hopes for continued success.
ETA: From your description of the virus symptoms, it sounds like, due to not absorbing nutrition and being near kidney failure, you were actually going into starvation and not "starvation mode" as people use it to describe adaptive thermogenesis. The symptoms you describe sound similar to what my wife experienced once with contracting salmonella, including kidneys close to shutting down. But, in all likelyhood, the weight increase you experienced was almost all water weight from the rehydration and they likely gave you glucose solution in the hospital which would have cause a refilling of your glycogen stores.5 -

It’s just a guess based on some terms that have come up, but it’s at least an actual thing (unlike starvation “mode”).
