I got a new polar heart rate monitor with the straps that go across your chest and I was wondering, it says the calories burnt for my 1.5hrs of cardio was 1538 calories while MFP puts it just over 1000 calories, is the heart monitor that accurate or should I go by the MFP numbers? Right now I'm using MFP because I figure the lower number to error on the side of caution. I just didn't know how accurate the Heart Rate Monitors are on calories burnt.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The reason that your HRM is MORE accurate is that it take a constant heart rate and uses that with all your PERSONAL info to make the calculation. MFP is wonderful BUT it doesn't know your heart rate and thus how intensely you worked!

    Trust your Polar!!

I just got one too and MFP said I only burned 260 in calorie but my Polar HRM said I burned 420. I know it's more accurate, so that why I'm going with it! HRM are personalized where MFP is not.

Interesting the watch has a default VO2 of max, Mine is 24 using an online calculator.. Wouldn't a lower VO2 max probably increase the calories even more?

Right a VO2 max is about oxygen intake during exercise, etc. and you'd have to have an actual test to know it. BUT I believe there are averages.......I would google this. I was told to enter 35 as an average.

Maybe check with the POLAR website?

There is a lot of info on the web on this and maybe you could find an average for your gender height and weight?

I know it is tricky - but it will still be so much more accurate than MFP can be.

OOPS - didn't see your previous post before I wrote this. Hmmmmm, well they chose an average for a reason.......

Cross check you exercise info with this website for more info....he's the guy who developed the calculation formula for HRM.....
